15 Must-Visit Attractions in Penang
15 Penang Attractions Worth Your Time
Penang has no shortage of things to see. These 15 are the ones that consistently deliver, whether you have 2 days or a week.
1. George Town Heritage Zone
The whole city is the attraction. Start at Fort Cornwallis, walk south along the waterfront past the Esplanade, turn into the shophouse streets. Budget half a day minimum; you'll need more.
Free. Walking the streets costs nothing. Guided tours from RM 45/person.
2. Kek Lok Si Temple
The largest Buddhist temple complex in Malaysia, on the slopes of Penang Hill in Air Itam. The seven-storey pagoda (Ban Po Thar) combines Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles. The giant bronze statue of Goddess of Mercy Kuan Yin is 30.2 metres tall.
Free entry; funicular to pagoda top RM 2.
3. Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera)
The colonial hilltop retreat at 833 metres above sea level. The funicular railway takes 5 minutes. At the top: cool air, an observatory, food stalls, and views across George Town to the mainland.
Funicular: RM 30 adults, RM 15 children.
4. Ernest Zacharevic Street Art Murals
The Lithuanian artist's 2012 murals changed how George Town presents itself. The most famous — Boy on Bicycle at 85 Lebuh Armenian — is now one of Malaysia's most photographed images. The Kids on Swing at the junction of Lebuh Armenian and Lorong Love is equally striking.
Free. Map available at the Heritage Trail information centre.
5. Khoo Kongsi
The most elaborately decorated Chinese clan temple in Malaysia. Built by the Khoo clan — Hokkien immigrants from Fujian — the complex includes a clan house, temple, and ancestral hall dripping in gilt, carvings, and painted beams.
Entry RM 10. Cannon Square, George Town.
6. Penang Peranakan Mansion
The largest collection of Peranakan antiques in Southeast Asia, displayed in a restored 1896 mansion.
Entry RM 25 adults. 29 Church Street, George Town.
7. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (The Blue Mansion)
The indigo-blue Hakka mansion of Chinese entrepreneur and Qing dynasty consul Cheong Fatt Tze, built in 1880. Guided tours three times daily.
Tours RM 35. 14 Leith Street.
8. Penang Botanic Gardens
35 hectares of tropical gardens at the foot of Penang Hill, established 1884. Free entry. Monkeys are genuinely wild and genuinely bold — don't bring open food.
Free. Jalan Kebun Bunga.
9. Sri Mahamariamman Temple
The main Hindu temple in George Town, on Queen Street, serving Penang's Tamil community since 1833. The gopuram (gateway tower) is covered in vividly painted deities. Entry is free; remove shoes before entering.
Free. Queen Street.
10. Kapitan Keling Mosque
Built in 1801 by Indian Muslim traders, the Kapitan Keling Mosque is one of Malaysia's oldest mosques. Visitors can enter outside prayer times.
Free, respectful dress required. Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.
11. Clan Jetties (Chew Jetty)
Wooden stilt villages extending over the sea in the waterfront area below the Heritage Zone. The Chew Jetty is the largest — an actual functioning community where the same Hokkien families have lived since the 1800s.
Free. 10 minutes' walk from Fort Cornwallis.
12. Penang Museum and Art Gallery
Covers Penang's natural history, colonial history, and cultural heritage across two floors.
