What is Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm?
Entopia (formerly Penang Butterfly Farm, founded 1986) is the world's first live butterfly garden — a walk-through vivarium at Teluk Bahang housing 15,000+ free-flying butterflies from 120+ species among tropical plants. The adjacent indoor Cocoon has interactive nature exhibits, VR experiences, and air-conditioned discovery stations. Admission is RM70 adult/RM45 child (foreigners); open daily 9am–5pm, last entry 4pm.
The Penang Butterfly Farm was founded in 1986 by David Goh at a time when no commercial butterfly garden of its scale existed anywhere in the world — the concept of a walk-through live butterfly vivarium was new enough that its opening drew international nature media. The original farm combined a tropical plant collection with a large netted enclosure allowing butterflies to fly freely among visitors. The idea was that people would engage more deeply with butterfly biology and conservation if they could walk through a cloud of living insects rather than view specimens pinned behind glass.
The rebranding as Entopia in 2017 — coined from "entomology" and "utopia" — emphasised the educational mission and added indoor facilities for year-round visits regardless of weather. The outdoor Natureland remains the centrepiece: 15,000 butterflies from 120+ species fly freely through planted zones of their preferred host and nectar plants, landing on visitors who stand still and wear bright colours. The indoor Cocoon adds microscope stations, beetle and stick-insect colonies, a VR journey through the butterfly life cycle, and a beetle research display that ventures into the less glamorous but ecologically critical world of insect biodiversity beyond the butterflies.
History
Read the full history of Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm
The Penang Butterfly Farm opened in 1986 at Teluk Bahang, founded by David Goh with the dual aim of butterfly conservation and tourism. Penang's northern coastal forest supports exceptional butterfly diversity — the island lies in a biogeographically diverse region where Indo-Malayan butterfly species overlap with sub-tropical species. The original farm was designed around the specific plants required by the butterfly species they intended to keep: each species requires particular host plants for egg-laying and caterpillar feeding, separate from the nectar plants the adults visit. The plant collection is therefore a functional system, not a decorative backdrop.
The farm's conservation work has included participation in captive-breeding programmes for threatened butterfly species and research on butterfly biology that has contributed to academic publications. The rebranding to Entopia in 2017 preserved the butterfly collection as the centrepiece while expanding programming to include the full range of insects. The original outdoor enclosure is largely unchanged; the Cocoon building is a new addition alongside it.
Photography Guide
- Best time
- Morning (9am–11am) on sunny days — butterflies are most active in warm sunlight. Overcast or rainy conditions reduce butterfly activity significantly; the Cocoon indoor section compensates on wet days but Natureland is less productive.
- Best position
- Butterflies on flowers at eye level with natural background blur (f/4–5.6, 100mm macro equivalent). The denser butterfly activity is in open sunny sections near nectar flower beds. For wing-open shots, approach very slowly from the butterfly's front — a direct approach causes the wings to close.
- What's allowed
- Photography throughout. No flash inside enclosed butterfly areas — it disturbs the insects. The chrysalis display is usually well-lit for close-up photography.
Tips
- Wear bright red, orange, or yellow — butterflies are attracted to vivid colours and more likely to land on you
- Move slowly and avoid sudden movements; butterflies settle on visitors who stand still
- Bring or rent a macro lens attachment if you want close-up wing detail shots
- Visit in the morning on a sunny day — afternoon is hot and butterfly activity drops
Plan Your Visit
Before your visit
Both are on the same coastal strip — do the spice garden in the morning, then Entopia.
After your visit
The park entrance is 15 minutes west — if energy allows, continue for a beach hike.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Entopia?
Entopia (formerly Penang Butterfly Farm) is a live butterfly garden and nature discovery hub at Teluk Bahang. It houses 15,000+ free-flying butterflies from 120+ species in a walk-through outdoor vivarium (Natureland) plus an indoor interactive section (Cocoon) with nature exhibits, VR, and insect displays.
Will butterflies actually land on me?
Yes — if you stand still near nectar plants and wear bright colours (red, orange, yellow), butterflies will frequently land on you. The enclosure has high butterfly density and the insects are habituated to human presence.
How long does a visit to Entopia take?
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a complete visit — the Natureland walk (45–60 minutes) plus the Cocoon indoor section (30–45 minutes). Add time if you plan to photograph extensively.
Is Entopia good for children?
Yes — it's consistently one of the best child-appropriate attractions in Penang. The indoor Cocoon has hands-on exhibits calibrated for children, and the experience of butterflies landing on you is reliably exciting for younger visitors.
Is the entrance fee worth it?
At RM70 for adult foreigners, Entopia is one of the pricier attractions in Penang. For anyone genuinely interested in insects and nature, yes. Consider pairing it with the nearby Tropical Spice Garden (RM35) for a full day on the northern coast.
