Who we are and what we collect

VisitPenang.com is a travel guide to Penang. We collect what you give us, such as your email address when you sign in or subscribe to the newsletter. We also collect usage data, such as pages visited and where you came from, through analytics.

If you submit a business listing, review, or trip report, we collect the content you submit along with your account details.

Why we collect it

We use it to:

Run and improve the site
Send the newsletter you subscribed to (you can unsubscribe at any time)
Answer enquiries
Moderate content people submit

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Medical enquiries and health information

When you send a hospital enquiry, we collect your name, email, country, the treatment you are asking about, and anything else you choose to add, such as a phone number, preferred hospital, travel dates and a message. We also record the page you sent it from, when your browser shares it.

The treatment you ask about is health information, which Malaysian data protection law treats as sensitive. We only use it with your explicit consent, which you give with the consent box on the form. We use it to answer your enquiry and to pass it to the hospital named in it, or to one that offers the treatment, so the hospital can contact you. We record when you gave consent, which wording you agreed to, and which hospital we passed your enquiry to. We do not use it for marketing and we do not sell it.

Your enquiry leaves Malaysia. The providers that run the site for us (network, hosting, database and email) handle it on servers in other countries.

We keep an enquiry no longer than needed to deal with it. You can ask us to delete it at any time through the contact form.

We use cookies and similar technologies to make the site work, measure traffic and, where they are switched on, show ads. These include:

Affiliate links and who we share with

Some links go to booking sites and tour operators. We may earn a commission when you book through them, at no extra cost to you. Those sites have their own privacy policies. We share data only with the providers that run the site for us, the business you send an enquiry to, and, for medical enquiries, the hospital you asked about.

We use Stay22, an affiliate service that turns some of our accommodation and map links into affiliate links. To credit bookings to us, Stay22's script creates an identifier from your browser and device characteristics (a device fingerprint) and sends it to Stay22. It does not receive your name or contact details from us. If you are in the EEA or UK, we ask first and load it only if you accept. You can also block it with a browser content or tracker blocker; our pages work normally without it.

How long we keep it

We keep your data no longer than needed for the purpose we collected it for. You can ask us to delete your account and its data at any time from your account settings.
