The Goddess of Mercy Temple — Kuan Yin Teng, or Kong Hock Keong — is the oldest Chinese temple in Penang, sitting on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Pitt Street) in the heart of George Town's heritage core. Jointly founded by the early Hokkien and Cantonese communities, it began as a temple to the sea goddess Mazu before being rededicated to Guan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, by 1824. It's a working temple rather than a museum piece: incense coils hang from the sweeping roof, dragon-entwined pillars frame the hall, and the forecourt fills with devotees and fortune-tellers, especially around the feast days of Guan Yin and the Jade Emperor's birthday. Free to enter, it's an easy, atmospheric stop on any George Town heritage walk.

Built in the early 1800s (some sources cite 1728) and originally dedicated to Mazu; rededicated to Guan Yin by 1824 as Chinese migration to George Town grew. The temple survived the 1941 Japanese bombing of Penang and was most recently restored between 2012 and 2017.
