Navaratri — Nine Nights of the Goddess

Navaratri is the nine-night Hindu festival honouring the Goddess, celebrated September–October. Penang's Tamil community creates elaborate Golu (doll) displays in homes and temples for nine days of prayers and music.

Festival

Navaratri ('nine nights') is the Hindu festival honouring the Divine Feminine — celebrated over nine nights from September or October, based on the Hindu lunar calendar. In Penang's Tamil Hindu community, Navaratri is marked by the Golu tradition: elaborate displays of dolls and figurines arranged on tiered shelves in homes and temples. Women visit each other's Golu displays and exchange gifts of fruits, sweets, and kumkum (vermillion powder). The Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple on Waterfall Road and the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Chulia Street hold elaborate evening prayers and musical performances on each of the nine nights. The tenth day, Vijayadasami, is considered auspicious for beginning new undertakings. In 2026, Navaratri begins approximately September 22. The Golu displays — which can reach elaborate heights with hundreds of figurines — are open for viewing by all visitors and represent some of the most intricate folk art traditions still practiced in Penang.
