Day 1
Thursday, January 1, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 34 Grab
Start with an unhurried breakfast at this George Town heritage cafe. The pastries and local coffee are excellent. Worth arriving early before the weekend crowd arrives.
Park near Pengkalan Weld and walk the UNESCO heritage zone — Armenian Street murals, Khoo Kongsi, Cheong Fatt Tze exterior, Love Lane. With a car you can return later for the Blue Mansion tour; for now, do the walking circuit and get your bearings.
Drive 25 minutes north to Teluk Bahang for lunch at the Tropical Spice Garden restaurant — set in a stunning hillside garden with views over the Andaman Sea. The lunch menu uses herbs grown on the property. Book ahead on weekends.
After lunch, walk the self-guided spice garden trail — 2 hectares of rainforest hillside with 500+ species of tropical plants, spices, and herbs. Excellent for photography. Spot nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, black pepper, and dozens of medicinal plants.
Drive 5 minutes south to Batu Ferringhi for a late-afternoon beach session. The long sandy beach is best in the golden hour. Rent a deckchair (RM 5-10), cool off in the sea, and watch the parasailers. The night market starts setting up around 6pm along the main road.
Meal Suggestions
China House — brunch with local coffee
RM 35-55
Tropical Spice Garden Restaurant — set lunch using garden herbs, with sea views
RM 45-65
Batu Ferringhi seafood strip — Sri Bahari (fresh seafood, butter prawns, steamed fish); or the night market for street food
RM 45-70 (seafood restaurant) / RM 15-25 (night market)
Day 2
Friday, January 2, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 68 Grab
Drive 20 minutes south to the 30-hectare Botanic Gardens — free, open from 5am. Morning mist lingers in the orchid garden and lily ponds. A troop of dusky leaf monkeys often comes down from the forest at this hour. Excellent early-morning walk before the heat.
Drive to the Penang Hill funicular base and take the 5-minute funicular to 833m elevation. Panoramic views of George Town, the Penang Bridge, and the Strait of Malacca. Walk the forest trails and visit the Owl Museum. With your own transport you can park at the base and avoid the Grab cost.
A 5-minute drive from Penang Hill base to Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple in Air Itam. Drive straight up past the bazaar to the upper car park (saves 20 minutes of walking). Visit the pagoda and Kuan Yin hilltop statue.
Drive 30 minutes north to Penang's top adventure park — zip lines, giant swings, obstacle courses, and treehouse walkways set in primary rainforest. Great for all ages. Book tickets online in advance; the park gets busy on weekends. Bring a change of clothes.
Drive back south to Gurney Drive for an evening hawker dinner. Post-adventure hunger is well served here — assam laksa, char koay teow, satay, and cold drinks. The sea view adds to the experience.
Meal Suggestions
Packed breakfast or coffee shop near Botanic Gardens — simple kopitiam nearby on Jalan Kebun Bunga
RM 8-15
Air Itam laksa at the hawker stalls near Kek Lok Si — among the best versions on the island
RM 8-12
Gurney Drive Hawker Centre — full hawker spread after an active day
RM 20-30
Day 3
Saturday, January 3, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 38 Grab
Drive 45 minutes over the central hills to Balik Pulau — a Hakka market town that feels nothing like tourist Penang. The Sunday morning market (Pasar Awam Balik Pulau) sells local produce, traditional Nyonya kuih, and fresh durian in season (Jun-Aug). A genuine slice of old Penang.
Balik Pulau is famous for its own version of asam laksa — tangier and fishier than the George Town version. The stalls in the market town have been doing this for generations. This is a dish that food lovers specifically drive across the island for.
Drive back across the island (45 min) and park in George Town for the 2pm Blue Mansion guided tour — one of Penang's best heritage experiences. The 38-room Straits Eclectic mansion is as impressive inside as out.
Walk the clan jetties and then the Esplanade waterfront. With your own car parked nearby, you can move freely without timing Grab rides. The golden hour light on the Chew Jetty wooden houses is excellent for photography.
Meal Suggestions
Balik Pulau Sunday market — Nyonya kuih, local coffee, fresh fruit
RM 10-15
Balik Pulau asam laksa — the specific island version that food lovers drive for
RM 8-12
Inti Restaurant (George Town) — contemporary Malaysian; or Gurney Drive hawker for a final night under the stars
RM 55-80 (Inti) / RM 20-30 (hawker)
💡Travel Tips
- ✓Free parking is available near Pengkalan Weld and Swettenham Pier — use the paid surface lots at RM 1/hour rather than risking street parking tickets
- ✓Escape Park gets very busy on weekends — book tickets online and arrive before 10am or after 3pm
- ✓Balik Pulau road is a scenic mountain pass (30 min) — GPS will take you via the main road but the pass is worth it on a clear day
- ✓The Sunday morning market in Balik Pulau runs until noon only — plan your timing
- ✓Penang's roads have motorbike lanes; be cautious overtaking at junctions, especially on the older George Town streets
