Day 1
Thursday, January 1, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 20 Grab
The oldest nasi kandar in Penang — halal, established 1907. The mutton dalcha, fish head curry, and dhal are the go-tos. Arrive early; the best curries run out by 10am. A Penang institution and the right way to start a halal food trip.
Armenian Street Heritage Walk
10:00 AM - 12:30 PMGeorge Town's UNESCO heritage core — walk from Armenian Street (street art murals) through Ah Quee Street, Love Lane, and Cannon Square. The heritage area is car-free and perfect for a morning walk before the heat builds. Many of the shophouses are Peranakan Muslim (Chetti Melaka) origin.
Guided tour of the indigo-blue mansion at 2pm. While Cheong Fatt Tze himself was Chinese, the architecture tells the story of Penang's multicultural heritage — Indian columns, English tiles, Chinese courtyards. A highlight of any Penang visit.
Khoo Kongsi clan house — extraordinary goldwork, temple paintings, and a restored theatre stage in the courtyard. From here, walk to Fort Cornwallis and the Esplanade for waterfront views before sunset.
Gurney Drive's famous open-air hawker centre on the seafront — most stalls here are halal or Muslim-owned. Try the assam laksa (check for halal label), murtabak from the mamak stalls, satay, and fresh coconut water. The sea breeze makes evening dining here memorable.
Meal Suggestions

RM 15-25
Nasi Kandar Kayu (KOMTAR branch) or Line Clear — both halal, reliable George Town staples
RM 12-20
Gurney Drive Hawker Centre — halal mamak stalls, assam laksa, murtabak, satay
RM 20-30
Day 2
Friday, January 2, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 45 Grab
Reliable 24-hour halal nasi kandar. The fish curry and dhal are excellent at breakfast time when everything is freshly cooked. Popular with local workers on their way to the office. Great value.
Grab to the funicular base (RM 20-25 from George Town centre). The 5-minute funicular ride to 833m gives panoramic views of the whole island. Walk the forest trails, visit the Penang Hill Owl Museum (RM 25), and stop for a drink at the summit cafe. Go early for the clearest views.
Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple — a 10-min Grab from Penang Hill base. Walk the covered bazaar, climb the pagoda for views, and see the giant Kuan Yin statue. Non-Buddhist visitors are welcome throughout.
George Town's Little India is culturally Muslim-friendly — Tamil Muslim spice merchants, halal Indian food, and textile shops alongside the Hindu temple. Browse the spice stalls, buy Indian sweets from the vendors, and visit the 1833 temple.
The famous cendol stall — the original recipe is coconut milk, pandan jelly, shaved ice, and gula melaka. Check that you're at the original stall (look for the long queue). Halal-friendly.
Meal Suggestions
Nasi Kandar Pelita — 24-hour halal nasi kandar on Penang Road
RM 10-18
Penang Hill summit area — halal food stalls near the funicular exit, or Air Itam mamak restaurants near Kek Lok Si
RM 12-20
Kapitan Restaurant (George Town) — halal Mughal Indian cuisine, famous for fish head curry and biryani

Day 3
Saturday, January 3, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 18 Grab
Kassim Mustafa Restaurant
8:30 AM - 9:30 AMA George Town halal institution for banana leaf rice and South Indian-style food. The lunchtime banana leaf is the main draw, but the roti and curry breakfast is excellent. Muslim-owned, open since the 1950s.
The Chinese clan jetties — Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, Lee Jetty. Families live in wooden stilt houses above the water. Walk to the quieter jetties for less tourist traffic and better light for photos back toward the George Town skyline.
The cluster of halal mamak stalls around Penang Road and Chulia Street is famous for murtabak — a stuffed, pan-fried flatbread filled with minced mutton, egg, and onion. Order one to share. Also try the roti canai and teh tarik.
A beautifully restored Peranakan-Baba Nyonya mansion with an extraordinary private collection of antiques, silverware, beaded shoes, and ceramics. Even for visitors who've seen many museums, this one impresses with its density and curation.
Esplanade & Padang
5:00 PM - 6:30 PMEnd your Penang trip with a walk across the open Padang (colonial-era cricket ground) and along the Esplanade waterfront. The old colonial buildings of George Town line the boulevard — City Hall, Town Hall, and the Supreme Court — all beautifully lit at dusk.
Meal Suggestions
Kassim Mustafa — South Indian halal breakfast
RM 12-20
Penang Road murtabak stalls — murtabak, roti canai, teh tarik
RM 12-18
Nasi Beriani Gam Thambi Bhundi — famous halal nasi beriani, open evenings, queue expected
