Day 1
Thursday, January 1, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 19 Grab
Open your Penang trip at George Town's iconic heritage cafe — freshly baked pastries, eggs, and excellent local coffee in three connected century-old shophouses. Weekend brunches are lively; weekday mornings are more peaceful.
Walk the UNESCO heritage core with maximum efficiency — Armenian Street murals (Little Girl on Chair, Ah Quee Street bicycle), Khoo Kongsi clan house (RM 10), Love Lane, Cannon Square, and the Peranakan Mansion exterior. This is Penang's headline act.
Guided tour at 2pm through the indigo-blue Straits Eclectic mansion. Non-negotiable for first-timers — the interior courtyard, Canton tiles, and Scottish iron columns are extraordinary. Book online or arrive 15 minutes early.
Walk to the historic clan jetties on the southern waterfront — Chew Jetty is the largest, with families still living in wooden stilt houses above the harbour. Head to Tan or Yeoh Jetty for quieter exploration. Golden hour light here is excellent.
Penang's most famous open-air hawker centre on the seafront. Must-order: assam laksa, char koay teow, and satay. The sea breeze and evening crowd make this the definitive Penang dinner experience for first-timers.
Meal Suggestions
China House — brunch, pastries, local coffee

Clan Cafe (Penang Road) — Nyonya dishes in a heritage shophouse

Day 2
Friday, January 2, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 44 Grab
The oldest nasi kandar in Penang (since 1907). Arrive early — the best curry runs out by 10am. The mutton dalcha and fish head curry are benchmarks. An essential Penang food stop.
Grab to the funicular base (RM 20-25). Ride up to 833m for the best views on the island — George Town, the Penang Bridge, and Kedah on clear days. Walk the forest trails and visit the Owl Museum. Go before 11am to beat the day-tripper rush.
10-min Grab from Penang Hill base to Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple. Walk the covered bazaar, climb the pagoda (RM 2 lift), and visit the giant Kuan Yin statue. Views from the hilltop are worth the climb.
Final afternoon in George Town — walk Penang Road's indie boutiques, browse Campbell Street market, and end with a bowl of the famous cendol at Penang Road Famous Teochew Cendol (RM 3).
Meal Suggestions
Hameediyah — oldest nasi kandar in Penang
RM 15-25
Air Itam laksa stalls near Kek Lok Si — among the best on the island

💡Travel Tips
- ✓Two days is tight — pick heritage OR nature on day 2, not both

- ✓Carry cash for hawker stalls; most don't accept cards
