The mangrove channels near Teluk Bahang harbour Pteroptyx fireflies that synchronise their flashing in spectacular displays. Best seen by boat from Teluk Bahang jetty on dark nights from March to October.

Visit on a new moon night for the darkest conditions and brightest firefly display

Green turtles nest at Pantai Kerachut in Penang National Park from May to October. The beach is accessible by boat or a 3-hour jungle trail — the National Park conservation centre monitors nests throughout the season.

Top Tip:

Book a boat from Teluk Bahang jetty (RM 20-30 per person return) rather than hiking — the trail is 3 hours through dense jungle

From June to August, Penang's markets overflow with mangosteen, rambutan, pulasan, langsat, and cempedak. The Balik Pulau district on the island's west coast has the best roadside fruit stalls and farmer's market.

Drive or Grab to Balik Pulau (45 min from George Town) for the best roadside fruit stalls — buy directly from farmers
