Mangosteen & Rambutan Season — Penang's Tropical Fruit Season
From June to August, Penang's markets overflow with mangosteen, rambutan, pulasan, langsat, and cempedak. The Balik Pulau district on the island's west coast has the best roadside fruit stalls and farmer's market.
While durian gets most of the attention, Penang's tropical fruit season from June to August brings an extraordinary variety of fruits that are fresher, cheaper, and more abundant here than almost anywhere in Malaysia. Mangosteen — the 'queen of fruits,' with its thick purple skin concealing white segments of extraordinary sweet-tart flavour — peaks in June and July. Rambutan (hairy red fruit with lychee-like flesh) peaks in July and August. Pulasan (similar to rambutan but richer), langsat, duku, cempedak, and the rarer buah kedondong flood the markets. The Balik Pulau district on Penang Island's west coast, 45 minutes from George Town, is the fruit basket of Penang — roadside stalls selling mangosteen, rambutan, and jackfruit pile up along the main road. The market at Pasar Balik Pulau (Balik Pulau Market) is the best place to buy directly from farmers. Combining the durian season (June-July) with the mangosteen and rambutan season creates Penang's most compelling food tourism experience of the year.
