Second Penang Bridge Opens — March 2013

📍 Where:Second Penang Bridge (Batu Maung, south Penang to Batu Kawan, mainland)

The Second Penang Bridge — at 24km the longest sea bridge in Southeast Asia — opened on March 1, 2013. It connects Batu Maung in south Penang to the mainland, relieving congestion on the first bridge.

Top Tip:

Bridge toll is RM 8.50 per car (Penang-bound only)

Ramadan Bazaars — Penang's Evening Food Markets

📅 When:Ramadan (March–April 2026; shifts ~11 days earlier each year)
📍 Where:Padang Polo (George Town), Gelugor, Bukit Mertajam, and major mosques throughout Penang

Every Ramadan, Penang's Muslim communities set up hundreds of afternoon food stalls for the iftar meal. The bazaars at Padang Polo and Gelugor are the island's best — open from 3pm, sold out by sunset.

Top Tip:

Arrive at 3pm when stalls open — popular items (murtabak, ayam percik, bubur) sell out before sunset

📍 Where:Kapitan Keling Mosque, Penang Road, Chowrasta Market area, and open houses across the island

Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of Ramadan in Penang. The open house tradition — where Muslim families welcome neighbours of all races — makes Penang's Eid celebrations uniquely multicultural.

Top Tip:

The Kapitan Keling Mosque on Pitt Street holds a major Eid congregation — respectful visitors are welcome to observe outside
