On December 17, 1941, Japanese forces captured Penang after advancing down the Malay Peninsula. The 3-year-8-month occupation left lasting scars, including the Sook Ching massacre of Chinese residents.

Dongzhi (Winter Solstice, December 21-22) is celebrated in Penang with tang yuan (glutinous rice balls in sweet broth) and family gatherings. Penang's clan association halls host communal celebrations open to visitors.

The Khoo Kongsi (the grandest clan hall in Penang, on Cannon Square) holds a communal Dongzhi observance — check with them directly for public visiting hours
