Firefly Watching — Teluk Bahang Mangroves

The mangrove channels near Teluk Bahang harbour Pteroptyx fireflies that synchronise their flashing in spectacular displays. Best seen by boat from Teluk Bahang jetty on dark nights from March to October.

Cultural

The mangrove forests along the coastline near Teluk Bahang and the Penang National Park boundary host one of Malaysia's overlooked natural spectacles: fireflies (kelip-kelip). Unlike the famous firefly tours at Kuala Selangor (2.5 hours from KL), Penang's fireflies are a more spontaneous discovery — visible on warm evenings when walking the forest edge at Teluk Bahang. The species present is primarily Pteroptyx tener, which synchronises its flashing in the mangrove trees, creating the characteristic 'Christmas tree' display of coordinated light pulses. The best conditions are dark nights (around new moon) from March to October, when the mangroves are at their warmest. A boat trip from Teluk Bahang jetty at dusk, following the shoreline into the mangrove channels, is the most reliable way to see them. The Penang National Park's boat operators offer informal firefly tours from the Teluk Bahang end. The display is most intense from 8-10pm in the mangrove channels away from road light pollution.

Insider Tips

  • 1Visit on a new moon night for the darkest conditions and brightest firefly display
  • 2Hire a boat from Teluk Bahang jetty for RM 40-60 per boat (fits 4-6 people) — ask boat operators for the 'kelip-kelip route'
  • 3Bring insect repellent — mangroves at night mean mosquitoes
  • 4The display is best 8-10pm, well after sunset — combine with dinner at Teluk Bahang's seafood restaurants beforehand
