Durian Season
Penang's beloved durian season sees locals flocking to Balik Pulau orchards for freshly harvested Musang King and other prized varieties eaten at roadside stalls.
Durian season in Penang, running roughly from May through August with peak harvest in June and July, is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. The "King of Fruits" inspires a devotion in Penang that borders on obsession, with locals driving to Balik Pulau -- the rural, orchard-rich western side of the island -- to eat freshly harvested durians at roadside stalls and farm orchards. The experience of eating durian in its place of origin, surrounded by the orchards where it grew, is worlds apart from buying pre-packaged durian in a supermarket.
Balik Pulau's durian orchards produce several prized varieties, with Musang King (Mao Shan Wang) being the most famous and expensive. Other excellent varieties include D24, Red Prawn (Ang Heh), XO, and Black Thorn. Knowledgeable farmers can guide visitors through tastings of different varieties, each with distinct flavour profiles ranging from bitter-sweet to creamy and custardy. Prices vary significantly by variety and the stage of the season, with early and late season commanding premium prices.
Beyond eating fresh durian, Penang offers a range of durian-derived treats: durian cendol, durian ice cream, durian puffs, and durian dodol (a sticky sweetmeat). Several farms in Balik Pulau offer orchard tours where visitors can see durian trees, learn about cultivation, and sample fruits straight from the tree. For the uninitiated, Penang's durian season is the best possible introduction to this polarising fruit.
Insider Tips
- 1Drive to Balik Pulau for the freshest durian, where fruit is harvested that morning and sold roadside
- 2Ask the stall operator to recommend a variety based on your taste -- Musang King is rich, D24 is milder
- 3Go in the morning when the selection is best and the heat is more manageable
- 4Combine a durian trip with a visit to Balik Pulau's nutmeg orchards and laksa stalls
