The Eastern & Oriental Hotel opened on Penang's seafront in 1885, founded by the Sarkies Brothers who also built Raffles Singapore. Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham were guests.

Even if you're not staying, the E&O's heritage wing lobby and seafront terrace are open for afternoon tea and drinks

Ponggal is the Tamil harvest festival celebrated on January 14, marked by boiling sweet rice outdoors until it overflows — symbolising abundance. A glimpse into Penang's ancient Tamil Hindu community.

Ponggal falls on January 14 each year (the first day of the Tamil month Thai)

Arrive at the Waterfall Hilltop Temple by 6am to secure a good viewing spot for the procession's arrival

George Town erupts in red lanterns, lion dances, and firecrackers as Penang celebrates the Lunar New Year with clan house festivities and spectacular light displays at Kek Lok Si Temple.

Visit Kek Lok Si at night for the spectacular LED light-up that runs from weeks before CNY until Chap Goh Mei
