Day 1
Thursday, January 1, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 11 Grab
Sri Ananda Bahwan Restaurant
8:00 AM - 9:30 AMPenang's most beloved South Indian vegetarian institution — open since 1966, on Lebuh Queen in the heart of Little India. Breakfast here means idli with sambar and coconut chutney, dosai (plain or masala), and filter coffee. Arrive before 9am when the dosai queue is at its most atmospheric. The banana leaf lunch later in the day is equally legendary.
George Town's Little India is one of the most intact Tamil neighbourhoods in Southeast Asia. Walk from Sri Ananda Bahwan along Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Queen — spice merchants, jasmine garland stalls, Tamil sweet shops (try the ladoo and mysore pak from the street vendors), and textile merchants. Visit Sri Mahamariamman Temple (est. 1833) and the Sri Muniswarar Temple on Lebuh Chulia. The neighbourhood is deeply vegetarian-friendly.
The iconic cendol stall — shaved ice, pandan green jelly, coconut milk, and gula melaka. Fully vegetarian and one of Penang's defining food experiences. The adjacent stall sells rojak (mix without shrimp paste on request for vegan).
Armenian Street Heritage Walk
2:30 PM - 5:00 PMWalk the UNESCO heritage core — Armenian Street murals (Little Girl on Chair, Ah Quee Street bicycle), Love Lane's painted shophouses, and Cannon Square. Stop into the many vegetarian-friendly cafes along the route: Jing-Si Books & Cafe (Buddhist, fully vegetarian) on Armenian Street is a quiet retreat with free iced barley water.
Seang Teik Vegetarian Restaurant
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMA long-established Chinese Buddhist vegetarian restaurant in George Town — mock meats, tofu dishes, vegetable curries, and herbal soups. Busy with locals in the evening. The sambal tempeh and the claypot tofu are consistently excellent. Fully vegetarian kitchen.

Kafe Tong Fong Fatt
7:30 AM - 9:00 AMA Chinese Buddhist vegetarian kopitiam that has been in George Town for decades. The morning spread includes vegetarian char koay teow (stir-fried rice noodles, no lard, no eggs available on request), tofu soup, and Chinese herbal tea. A quiet, local breakfast experience well off the tourist trail.
Grab to the Penang Hill funicular base (RM 20-25). The 5-minute ride rises to 833m — panoramic views of George Town, the Penang Bridge, and the Strait of Malacca. Walk the summit forest trails. The summit cafe serves drinks; pack a vegetarian snack from George Town if you want to eat at the top.
Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple — a natural stop after Penang Hill (10-min Grab). Kek Lok Si has its own vegetarian restaurant within the temple grounds, serving simple Buddhist temple food: steamed rice, tofu, stir-fried greens, and herbal broth. Eat here for an authentic temple dining experience unlike any restaurant in George Town.
The Khoo Kongsi clan house — Penang's most ornate heritage building, with goldwork, ceramic figurines, and a temple stage. From here, walk to Fort Cornwallis and the Esplanade for waterfront views at golden hour.
Gurney Drive hawker centre has dedicated vegetarian stalls — look for the Chinese Buddhist vegetarian section in the rear of the complex. The popiah (fresh spring rolls, egg-free available), vegetable char koay teow, and corn on the cob are all safe. Cendol and fresh coconut water round out dinner. The seafront setting with a sea breeze is worth coming for even if the vegetarian options are more limited than elsewhere.

Saturday, January 3, 2026
Est. transport: ~RM 19 Grab
Sri Ananda Bahwan — Banana Leaf Lunch Prep
8:30 AM - 10:00 AMReturn to Sri Ananda Bahwan for a different meal — the banana leaf rice lunch is the main event, but arrive early for the breakfast thali: a steel tray with idli, vada, sambar, and three chutneys. The banana leaf is served from 11am; plan to be back for an early lunch.
Guided tour at 11am through the indigo-blue Straits Eclectic mansion — 38 rooms, Scottish cast-iron columns, Canton tiles, interior courtyards. A Penang highlight that has nothing to do with food and everything to do with the island's layered heritage. Book online or arrive 15 minutes early.
Sri Ananda Bahwan — Banana Leaf Rice
12:00 PM - 1:30 PMThe banana leaf lunch at Sri Ananda Bahwan is one of Penang's great vegetarian meals — a fresh banana leaf laid in front of you, heaped with rice, dhal, rasam, three vegetable curries, papadum, and pickle. Unlimited top-ups on the greens. Signal by folding the leaf away from you when done. Arrive by 12:15pm before the line builds.
The Chinese clan jetties on the south waterfront — Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, Lee Jetty. Families still live in wooden stilt houses above the harbour. Walk the quieter jetties for less tourist traffic and better light for photos toward the George Town skyline at golden hour.
Annalakshmi Restaurant
5:30 PM - 7:00 PMA pay-as-you-wish South Indian vegetarian restaurant run by the Temple of Fine Arts — the model is cook-and-give, with no fixed prices. The buffet features South Indian curries, rice dishes, and sweets. A genuinely unique dining experience and a fitting close to a vegetarian Penang trip.

💡Travel Tips
- ✓Sri Ananda Bahwan is closed on certain public holidays — check before you go; the branch on Lebuh Queen is the most consistent
- ✓During the Nine Emperor Gods Festival (October, 9 days) almost every hawker stall in George Town goes vegetarian — an extraordinary time to visit if your dates align
- ✓The Buddhist vegetarian restaurants (Seang Teik, Kafe Tong Fong Fatt) close early — most wrap up by 8pm; plan dinner accordingly
- ✓Cendol at Penang Road is vegetarian; the peanut sauce at some popiah stalls contains shrimp paste — always ask 'tiada udang?' (no shrimp?) to be safe
- ✓Grab works well everywhere in George Town; carry cash (RM 50-100) for hawker stalls and temple food — most don't accept cards
- ✓For vegan visitors: Sri Ananda Bahwan can accommodate vegan requests (no ghee, no paneer) if you ask; Buddhist vegetarian restaurants are often already vegan
