Penang Hawker Finder
It’s a certain time, you’re in a certain area, and you want a certain kind of food. Tell us all three and we’ll point you to stalls that are open right now.
What hawker food in Penang is open right now near me?

A note on accuracy. Hawkers keep their own hours and rest days, and famous stalls sell out early. The finder shows an open/closed verdict only when the recorded hours are clear enough to read; otherwise it shows the raw hours and asks you to check. Halal labels appear only where the data explicitly records halal status — stalls without that data show “not specified,” never an assumed badge. Always confirm at the stall.

Hawker Finder FAQs
How does the Penang Hawker Finder decide what’s open?
It reads the opening hours we hold for each stall and restaurant and checks them against the time you pick (or the current Malaysia time in “Right now” mode). When the listed hours are written in a format we can read confidently, the finder shows an open or closed verdict. When the hours are vague or unusual, it does not guess — it shows the raw hours and asks you to check the listing. Stalls also have closing days (for example New Lane closes on certain days), which the finder honours where the data records them.
Can I trust the halal labels?
The finder only shows a halal label when the underlying data explicitly records it — a JAKIM/state certification, a Muslim-owned designation, or a halal dietary tag. Many individual hawker stalls in our floor-plan data do not carry a per-stall halal status (it is recorded at the centre level in prose), so those show “Halal status not specified” rather than a halal badge. We deliberately never assert halal from a stall’s name alone. When in doubt, look for halal signage or ask the vendor.
Why does a famous stall show as closed?
Many of Penang’s best stalls run short, specific hours and sell out. The legendary Kimberly Street char kway teow stall, for example, only sets up around 2:30pm and sells until it runs out, so at 9am it will correctly show as not open yet. The finder surfaces these under “Matches, but not open at this hour” so you can plan to come back later.
What if nothing is open in my area?
The finder falls back to open, dietary-matching options island-wide so you are never left with a dead end. If you need a guaranteed late-night halal option, Line Clear Nasi Kandar in George Town is open around the clock. You can also widen the area to “Anywhere on the island” or switch the time window.
Does “keep it mild” guarantee a non-spicy meal?
No. The mild filter hides dishes we know are typically fiery — asam laksa, curry mee, mee goreng, and nasi kandar gravies. It does not claim the remaining dishes are mild; it simply does not have heat information for them. Spice levels at hawker stalls vary by vendor and by your request, so always tell the stall how you like it.
Where does the finder’s data come from?
Every stall, dish, price, and opening-hours value comes from Visit Penang’s own Penang food data — the same dataset behind our hawker centre floor plans, food directory, halal guide, vegetarian guide, late-night guide, and kopitiam guide. The finder does not invent stalls or hours; it only surfaces what already exists in those guides.
