Ramadan Bazaars — Penang's Evening Food Markets
Every Ramadan, Penang's Muslim communities set up hundreds of afternoon food stalls for the iftar meal. The bazaars at Padang Polo and Gelugor are the island's best — open from 3pm, sold out by sunset.
During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Penang's Muslim communities set up hundreds of temporary food stalls every afternoon to sell food for the breaking of the fast (iftar) at sunset. The Ramadan bazaars are a uniquely Malaysian food tradition that has become a highlight for visitors of all backgrounds. In Penang, the largest bazaars run in Padang Polo (George Town), Gelugor, Bukit Mertajam, and across the Seberang Perai districts. Stalls sell kuih (Malay cakes), ayam percik (grilled coconut chicken), murtabak, bubur lambuk (porridge distributed free at mosques), teh tarik, and dozens of dishes prepared specifically for Ramadan. The atmosphere — thousands of stalls lit up in the late afternoon heat, families loading up on food before sunset — is electric and distinctly Malaysian. Non-Muslim visitors are warmly welcomed; just be sensitive and avoid eating visibly in front of fasting vendors. The bazaars typically open around 3–4pm and sell out by 6:30pm (sunset). Ramadan shifts approximately 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar.
Insider Tips
- 1Arrive at 3pm when stalls open — popular items (murtabak, ayam percik, bubur) sell out before sunset
- 2Padang Polo bazaar near the Esplanade is the most accessible for tourists; Gelugor has the most local variety
- 3Pay cash — most stalls don't accept cards
- 4Be respectful: don't eat or drink in front of vendors who are fasting; greet them with 'Selamat Berbuka' (Happy Breaking Fast)
