First Time in Penang: The Essential 3-Day Plan
Three days is the minimum to get a real sense of Penang. This collection covers the essential experiences in a sequence that makes logistical sense — starting in George Town, going uphill on day two, and finishing at the beach. Skip nothing on this list.
What's in this collection
Day 1 base — walk Armenian Street, Khoo Kongsi, and Clan Jetties. Eat at a kopitiam for breakfast.
Every meal of the first day should be hawker food — set your expectations for everywhere else in Asia
First morning — the most elaborate Chinese clan house in Malaysia, free to enter the courtyard
Day 2 morning — book online, take the first car up before it gets hot
Day 2 afternoon — combine with Penang Hill (both in Air Itam, 5 minutes apart)
Day 3 — pair with Escape Theme Park or Penang National Park at Teluk Bahang
Day 3 afternoon — beach, sunset, night market. 30 minutes by Grab from George Town.
Local tips for this trip
- 📍
Stay in George Town for all 3 nights — it's walkable, atmospheric, and has the best food. Day-trip to Penang Hill and Batu Ferringhi from there.
- 📍
One Grab-heavy day (Penang Hill + Kek Lok Si + back) will cost about RM 60–80 total in transport.
- 📍
The heritage zone at night is different from the heritage zone in the morning — do both.
