Penang Airport (PEN) to George Town: Transport Guide 2026

Penang International Airport (IATA: PEN) sits at Bayan Lepas in the industrial south of the island, approximately 16 km from George Town. That distance takes 30–45 minutes on a normal afternoon, or up to 60–75 minutes if you land during the evening rush (5–7pm). There is no train link — all transport is road-based.

Here is what each option costs, how long it takes, and where to find it.

Grab is the ride-hailing app used throughout Malaysia and Singapore. You book via the app, see the fixed price before confirming, and pay by card or GrabPay. No negotiation, no meter disputes.

Fare from PEN to George Town: RM 25–40. The range depends on your exact destination within George Town and whether there is surge pricing. Evening rush arrivals may tip to RM 45.

Journey time: 30–45 minutes in normal traffic. 60+ minutes between 5–7pm on weekdays.

Pickup zone: Dedicated Grab/ride-hailing pickup bay on Level 1 (departure level). Follow the green "e-Hailing" signs from the arrival hall exit — it is separate from the regular taxi rank, a short walk further along. Do not wait at the main taxi stand; that is for metered cabs.

If you arrive without mobile data: Connect to the free airport WiFi (MAHB Free WiFi), open the Grab app, and book your ride. Your driver will be confirmed before you need to step outside. Once in the car, swap in your new SIM if you bought one at the counter.

Official Airport Taxi

The airport runs a pre-paid coupon taxi system. Buy your coupon at the taxi coupon counter in the arrival hall (Level 2) before you exit. Hand the coupon to the driver at the taxi stand — no cash changes hands in the car, no negotiation required.

Fare to George Town: RM 40–50 depending on your zone. The counter staff will quote the exact amount for your destination postcode.

This is slightly more expensive than Grab but requires no smartphone or Malaysian SIM. If you land with no data and want to skip the WiFi workaround, the taxi coupon desk is the straightforward alternative.

Note on non-coupon taxis: Outside the coupon system, metered taxis are also available. Always confirm the meter is running — flag-fall is RM 3. If a driver quotes a flat price and refuses to use the meter, take another cab or book Grab instead.

Rapid Penang Bus 401

Route 401 is the direct public bus between the airport and Komtar, the central bus hub in George Town.

Fare: RM 4 flat. Pay with cash or a Touch 'n Go card.

Journey time: 45–60 minutes including intermediate stops.

Frequency: Roughly every 60 minutes. Check the RapidPenang app or the timetable at the bus stop for the current schedule. The first departure is around 6am; the last run is approximately 10:30pm.

Bus stop location: Ground level outside the arrival hall. Follow signs to "Rapid Penang Bus" or "Bas Awam."

The 401 is the right choice for budget travellers with a manageable bag and no time pressure. It is not suitable if you arrive late at night, have heavy luggage, or need to reach a specific hotel address rather than Komtar.

From Komtar you can connect to most George Town hotel areas on foot (heritage zone is walkable from Komtar) or transfer to another Rapid Penang route.

Car Rental

Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, and local operators (Hawk, Kasina) have counters in the arrival hall.

Cost: RM 100–180/day for a compact. International licence accepted.

When a rental car makes sense: If you plan day trips outside George Town — Balik Pulau, Batu Ferringhi beach, Teluk Bahang, or the Penang Hill area — having a car saves time. Fuel is cheap (RON95 petrol is subsidised).

When a rental car does not make sense: For a stay confined to George Town. Parking in the heritage zone is scarce, expensive (RM 2–4/hour in car parks), and the streets are narrow one-ways. Grab will be cheaper and less stressful for city movement.

Left-hand traffic: Malaysia drives on the left, same as the UK and Australia.

No Train or MRT

Penang has no metro, LRT, or airport rail link. Unlike Kuala Lumpur (KLIA Ekspres) or Singapore (MRT to Changi), there is no train between PEN and the city. All options are road-based.

At the Airport: First 20 Minutes

Arrivals clear on Level 2. Once you exit customs and baggage, the following counters are immediately useful:

SIM card counters — Maxis, Digi (now CelcomDigi), and Unifi Mobile have booths inside the arrival hall. A tourist SIM with 10–30 days of data costs RM 15–30. Buy one here — you need it for Grab. The SIM counters are the first thing past the exit doors.

Money changers — Airport rates are typically 2–5% below what you will get at licensed changers on Lebuh Chulia or in Gurney Plaza. Change RM 100–200 at the airport to cover your taxi coupon or first meal; exchange more once you reach George Town.

ATMs — Maybank and CIMB ATMs are in the arrival hall. Use these if you need cash and the money changer rate is your concern.

Tourist information desk — Penang Global Tourism operates a counter near the exit. Useful for printed maps and hotel queries if you arrive without a booking.

Practical sequence for most arrivals:

  1. Clear immigration (15–25 minutes for most nationalities; electronic gates for eligible passports)
  2. Buy a tourist SIM at the counter (5 minutes)
  3. Collect luggage
  4. Change RM 150–200 in cash
  5. Book Grab on airport WiFi, or buy a taxi coupon at the counter
  6. Activate your SIM in the arrivals area before you reach your pickup zone

Departure: Getting Back to the Airport

Grab to the airport: Book 30–40 minutes before your planned departure time, not at the last minute. During morning peak (7–9am) and late afternoon (4–6pm), Grab wait times from George Town can stretch to 10–15 minutes. Budget 45–60 minutes total for the ride.

Airport taxi from your hotel: Ask hotel reception to arrange a metered airport taxi the evening before. Most hotels in George Town can pre-book a car for a set morning pickup — useful if you have an early international flight.

Check-in timing:

  • International flights: arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure
  • Domestic flights (KL, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu): 1.5 hours

Penang Airport is a single terminal and relatively compact. Security and check-in are faster than major hubs; 90 minutes is genuinely adequate for domestic, but do not cut it shorter than that on weekends when the check-in queues for budget carriers (AirAsia, Batik Air) can be slow.

Dining and shopping airside: There are food outlets (Old Town White Coffee, some local chains) and a duty-free shop post-security. Options are limited compared to KLIA or Singapore Changi — eat before you come if you are particular about food.

Batu Ferringhi and North Penang Hotels

The journey times above apply to George Town. If your hotel is in Batu Ferringhi (the northern beach strip), add 20–25 minutes to every estimate. Batu Ferringhi is at the opposite end of the island from the airport.

Grab from PEN to Batu Ferringhi: RM 50–70. Journey time: 50–70 minutes in normal traffic.

If you are staying at one of the resort hotels in Batu Ferringhi, confirm at booking whether the hotel operates an airport transfer — several do, at a fixed RM 80–120 per car, which is competitive with Grab for a group.
