A First Timer's Week in Penang: Day by Day
How to Spend Your First Week in Penang
A week in Penang is the right amount of time to go deep rather than skim. You can cover George Town heritage, Penang Hill, the beaches at Batu Ferringhi, Balik Pulau countryside, and still have time for the things that take half a day — the butterfly farm, the National Park, the Peranakan Mansion.
Day 1–2: George Town Heritage Core
Base yourself in George Town for the first two days. Start at Chew Jetty on Weld Quay (arrive before 9am), walk to Armenian Street for the street art murals, then into the shophouse grid for Khoo Kongsi clan house. On day two, add Fort Cornwallis, the Penang State Museum (RM 1 entry), and the Peranakan Mansion.
Eat hawker meals for every meal in George Town — kopitiams for breakfast, the wet market stalls for lunch, and Gurney Drive or the Esplanade hawker centre for dinner.
Day 3: Penang Hill + Kek Lok Si
Take the first funicular (6:30am opening) to Penang Hill before the queue builds. Spend 2–3 hours on the summit, then descend to Kek Lok Si Temple. This combination takes the full morning and early afternoon — it's a tiring day but the most scenically varied.
Day 4–5: Beaches and Nature
Move your base to Batu Ferringhi for two nights. Day 4 is beach time — morning swim, afternoon at the Tropical Spice Garden or Entopia Butterfly Farm, Batu Ferringhi night market in the evening. Day 5 is the Penang National Park (full morning jungle hike to Monkey Beach), then Balik Pulau in the afternoon for nutmeg juice and west coast laksa.
Day 6–7: The Things You Missed
Back in George Town for the final two days — use these to revisit anything you rushed, hit the stalls you missed, and do the things that take half a day: the Penang Museum of Ethnic Arts, Clan Jetties at sunset, or a cooking class. Day 7 should be deliberately unscheduled.
Where to Stay
Budget: Campbell House or Ryokan Muntri (heritage guesthouses in George Town core). Mid-range: Macallum Connoisseur Hotel or the Tune Hotel KOMTAR. Luxury: Seven Terraces or Cheong Fatt Tze (The Blue Mansion) if available.
