Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Penang Hill cable car open?

No. It is under construction: Penang’s chief minister put it at 32% complete in August 2026, with works due to finish in August 2027 and operations targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027. Until then the funicular from Air Itam is the only rail route up the hill.

When will the Penang LRT (Mutiara Line) open?

The transport ministry’s target is December 2031. Works were 8.99% complete in June 2026, so the line will not help a visitor get around before the 2030s. Use Rapid Penang buses and Grab for now.

Are Fort Cornwallis and the Penang State Museum open again?

Yes. Both reopened in July 2026 after long restorations. The state museum on Lebuh Farquhar opens 9am–5pm and closes on Fridays; Fort Cornwallis has not yet published its post-reopening hours and fees on an official page, so check before you go.
