Where to Stay for Business Events in Penang: SPICE vs PWCC
Attending a conference or trade show in Penang? Where to stay for Setia SPICE in Bayan Lepas and for the new PWCC in Gelugor, how far each is from the airport and George Town, and how to get back for dinner.

Penang has two purpose-built convention centres, and they are not in the same place. Setia SPICE is in Bayan Lepas, close to the airport. The Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC), which opened in October 2025, is in Gelugor, on the waterfront near the island end of the Penang Bridge. They are about 9 km apart by road, and neither is in George Town.
So the first question isn't which hotel to book. It's which venue your event is at. Check the venue on your badge or registration before you book, then use the section for that venue below.
Setia SPICE has a hotel connected to it, Amari SPICE Penang. PWCC doesn't have a hotel trading next to it yet, because The Light City's own hotel had not opened when we checked. If your event is at PWCC, plan on a short Grab ride whichever hotel you choose.

Road distances are calculated from OpenStreetMap data (OSRM routing), venue to airport terminal and venue to KOMTAR. We give distances, not drive times, because Penang's traffic varies too much by time of day for one number to be honest. Check the time in the Grab app before you leave. Venue facts come from our business events page.
Staying for an event at Setia SPICE (Bayan Lepas)
SPICE is Penang's largest convention and exhibition venue, with a main ballroom that takes up to 8,000 people in conference layout, plus the adjoining SPICE Arena. It has hosted the IAA World Congress (2024) and PCEB's own BE @ Penang showcase.
The obvious base is Amari SPICE Penang. The hotel's own website says it is directly connected to the SPICE Convention Centre and SPICE Arena, and puts it about 5 km from Penang International Airport. For a multi-day congress, being able to walk indoors between your room and the plenary hall matters more than anything else on this list. Book early if your event is large, because it's the one hotel delegates head for first.
If Amari is full, the nearest alternatives we verified on their own websites are:
- Eastin Hotel Penang, at Queensbay next to Queensbay Mall, about 5.3 km from SPICE by road.
- Iconic Marjorie Hotel (a Tribute Portfolio hotel), on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in Sungai Nibong, about 3.4 km from SPICE by road. Our business-events page also lists it as an event venue in its own right.
For the airport, SPICE is the most convenient venue in Penang: about 4.4 km by road to the terminal. If you have an early flight on the last day, stay near SPICE that night even if you spent the rest of the trip in George Town.
Staying for an event at PWCC (Gelugor)
PWCC is Penang's newest convention centre. It is managed by KINTEX of South Korea and has a column-free main hall that takes up to 8,000 people theatre-style, plus 19 meeting rooms. It has already hosted the MATTA Fair Penang and WATERTECH ASIA.
The Light City's hotel isn't open yet
PWCC sits inside The Light City, a waterfront development that is still opening in stages. Its hotel was first announced as two brands, JdV by Hyatt and Galaxy Minyoun, with a 2026 opening. A September 2026 report says the two have been combined into a single 459-room Hyatt Regency, announced to open in December 2026. When we checked in October 2026 it was not taking guests. The same report gives the development's mall, Waterfront Shoppes, an opening date of 29 October 2026. If your event is in 2027, check whether the Hyatt Regency has opened before you book elsewhere.
Until then, you have two sensible options:
1. Stay at Queensbay or Sungai Nibong, south of PWCC. Eastin Hotel Penang is about 5.5 km from PWCC by road. Eastin's own website has a page for PWCC delegates. Iconic Marjorie is about 7.2 km by road. Both put you on the same side of the city as the airport.
2. Stay in George Town and commute. PWCC is about 10.2 km by road from KOMTAR, so for a lot of delegates the heritage core makes more sense. You get Penang's food and evenings on your doorstep, and the daily trip is only a short Grab ride. JEN Penang Georgetown by Shangri-La on Magazine Road sits next to KOMTAR, George Town's main bus hub. Its address is confirmed on the hotel's own website. For a heritage hotel instead, see our George Town hotels and the where to stay area finder.
If you're driving yourself or have a hired car, PWCC's own website lists up to 2,900 parking bays.
Getting between the venue and George Town in the evening
Most delegates want to get from the conference to a hawker centre or a heritage-zone dinner. Here's what we can stand behind:
Grab is the practical option from either venue. Our Grab fare guide has no route that starts at PWCC or SPICE, so we won't make up a fare. For scale, the nearest routes we have are:
- Penang Airport to George Town: ~16 km, 25β35 minutes, RM 26β35. SPICE is near the airport end of this trip.
- George Town to Queensbay Mall: ~9 km, 15β20 minutes, RM 15β20. PWCC is at a similar distance from George Town.
The same guide flags surge pricing on weekday rush hours (7β9 am and 5β7 pm) and in heavy rain. The same guide notes that surge usually eases within 20β30 minutes, so if the conference finishes at 5:30 pm, a short wait at the venue can pay off.
Buses are possible, but not door to door. No Rapid Penang stop is named for PWCC; the nearest are on the 401E along Jalan Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu β "Jabatan Laut Wilayah Utara" (towards the airport, about 400 m from PWCC in a straight line) and "Lotus E-Gate" (towards George Town, about 500 m) β and we have not checked the walking route. SPICE has its own stops ("Amari SPICE", "SPICE Canopy") on the 401E, 302, 303, 304 and 308. The 401E runs every 15β20 minutes, with the last bus from Weld Quay at 11:30 pm and from Balik Pulau at 10:35 pm, so a late dinner programme still means Grab. See our bus route data.
For the trip to each venue from the airport, George Town and the mainland, including parking, see getting to SPICE and PWCC. For everything else, including airport transfers, Touch 'n Go and car hire, see getting around Penang.
Tips for groups and incentive trips
- Confirm the venue before you block rooms. SPICE and PWCC need different hotel plans. A group booked into a Bayan Lepas hotel for a PWCC event will spend part of every day in the car.
- Plan evening transfers around rush hour. A 50-person group leaving at 5:30 pm will hit the 5β7 pm surge window. Starting the dinner at 7:30 pm, or arranging a coach through your hotel or your destination management company, avoids it.
- Keep the gala close to where people sleep. Our business-events page names hotel ballrooms that host events, including Ascott Gurney, Royale Chulan Penang and Iconic Marjorie, as well as George Town heritage event spaces. A gala in the same area as the room block saves a second round of transfers.
- Use George Town for the free evening. The heritage core does the social programme for you: hawker dinners, street art and clan houses are all within walking distance. See what to do in George Town.
- Watch the event calendar. Large public fairs like the MATTA Fair at PWCC draw tens of thousands of visitors. If your dates overlap with one, expect more competition for rooms near the venue. Check the Penang business events calendar and the 2027 Penang planner when you set your dates.
How PCEB supports organisers
If you're bringing a conference, convention or exhibition to Penang rather than attending one, start with the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB). PCEB is the state bureau for business events, set up in 2016. It offers organisers free support: bid documents and presentations, marketing and promotion advice, and coordination with the state government and agencies. It also runs the annual BE @ Penang showcase at SPICE.
Contact details, venue capacities and Penang's recent track record of congresses and trade fairs are on our business events in Penang page. PCEB's official site is pceb.my.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which hotel is connected to the SPICE convention centre in Penang?
Amari SPICE Penang. The hotel's own website says it is directly connected to the SPICE Convention Centre and SPICE Arena in Bayan Lepas, about 5 km from Penang International Airport.
Is there a hotel at PWCC, the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre?
Not yet. The Light City development, where PWCC is, has a 459-room Hyatt Regency announced for December 2026, but it was not open when we checked in October 2026. The nearest trading hotels we verified are Eastin Hotel Penang at Queensbay, about 5.5 km away by road, and Iconic Marjorie in Sungai Nibong, about 7.2 km away. Central George Town is about 10.2 km away by road.
How far is PWCC from Penang airport?
About 10.9 km by road, calculated on OpenStreetMap data. SPICE is much closer to the airport, at about 4.4 km.
Should I stay in George Town for a conference in Penang?
Yes, if your event is at PWCC and you want your evenings in the heritage core. PWCC is about 10 km by road from central George Town. For SPICE, especially for a multi-day event or an early flight home, staying at or near the venue in Bayan Lepas is usually more practical.
How do I get from SPICE or PWCC to George Town in the evening?
By Grab. Bus routes in our data don't serve PWCC, and the airport-area 401E service stops running too early for a dinner programme. Avoid the 5β7 pm weekday rush if you can, because Grab fares surge then.
