Penang to Cameron Highlands: Bus Times, Cost, and What to Expect (2026)

Cameron Highlands sits at 1,500 metres above sea level. Average temperature: 18–25°C. In Penang, on the same day, you're looking at 30–34°C and humidity that makes the heat feel heavier. That 10-degree gap explains why Malaysians have been making this journey since the British built a hill station here in the 1920s — and why it remains one of Malaysia's most popular weekend escapes.

Best for:

This guide covers the two-stage bus route (Penang → Ipoh → Tanah Rata), the transfer at Ipoh Amanjaya Terminal, what to do once you're there, and the honest answer on whether a day trip is worth attempting.

Visitors wanting a break from the heat, travellers doing a Penang + Cameron Highlands combo, anyone interested in tea plantations or the Malaysian highlands

No direct bus connects Penang to Cameron Highlands. The standard route goes via Ipoh, with a transfer at Ipoh Amanjaya Terminal. It is straightforward once you know which terminal to head to.

Getting There: Penang to Ipoh to Cameron

Stage 1: Penang to Ipoh

By bus (most convenient): Penang Sentral (the integrated terminal at Butterworth) to Ipoh Amanjaya Terminal. Duration: 2–2.5 hours. Cost: RM 15–25. Operators include Transnasional, Konsortium Bas Ekspres, and KKKL. Multiple daily departures from around 7am onwards. Book on Easybook.com or at the Penang Sentral counter. The getting around guide has details on reaching Butterworth from George Town.

By ETS train (slightly faster, more comfortable): Take the free Penang Ferry from Georgetown Jetty to Butterworth (5 minutes, RM 1.70), then the KTM ETS from Butterworth Station to Ipoh Station. Journey: 1.5–2 hours. Cost: RM 20–35. Book at ktmb.com.my. The train station in Ipoh is at the colonial-era Ipoh Railway Station in the city centre — not at Amanjaya Terminal. From Ipoh Station, take a Grab to Amanjaya Terminal: RM 10–15, about 10 minutes.

Stage 2: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands (Tanah Rata)

Ipoh Amanjaya Terminal → Tanah Rata bus. Duration: 1.5–2 hours. Cost: RM 15–20. Operators: CatchExpress, Plusliner, Transnasional.

Multiple daily departures, but frequency drops in the afternoon — check Easybook.com for live schedules as timings shift seasonally. Buses typically run from around 8am to 4pm.

Tanah Rata vs Brinchang — know where you're dropped

Most buses terminate in Tanah Rata, the main town. Brinchang is further up the mountain and closer to the strawberry farms. Confirm with the operator when booking. From Tanah Rata, a Grab or taxi to Brinchang costs RM 8–12.

Total journey time: approximately 4–4.5 hours door-to-door. Total cost: RM 30–45 including the Penang Ferry. Allow 5 hours to be safe with the Ipoh transfer.

Why Go to Cameron Highlands

Tea Plantations

BOH Tea Centre at Sungei Palas estate and Bharat Tea are the two main plantations that welcome visitors. Both offer free entry; guided tours run approximately RM 5. The BOH visitor centre has a glass-floored platform overlooking the terraced hillside — the elevation views are as good as anywhere in Malaysia. Allow half a day if you want to see both.

Strawberry Farms

Pick-your-own strawberries are a Cameron staple. Raaju's Farm and Big Red Strawberry Farm are the most established. RM 20–30 per punnet. The farms also grow tomatoes, corn, and chrysanthemums — the flower growing at altitude is one of Cameron's less-photographed but genuinely interesting industries.

Mossy Forest Hike

The guided trail to the summit Mossy Forest on Gunung Brinchang is the best nature experience Cameron offers. Lichen-covered trees, permanent mist, the temperature dropping as you climb. Guided only on the summit trail: RM 25–40, 2–2.5 hours. Book through your guesthouse the evening before — numbers are limited and early morning departure is standard.

Night Market (Pasar Malam)

Tanah Rata town centre, roughly 6pm–10pm daily. Steamboat stalls, corn on the cob, fresh highland vegetables, rose-milk tea. Bring a jacket — evening temperatures in Cameron drop to 16–18°C.

Day Trip vs Overnight: The Honest Answer

Day trip is not practical.

The numbers: 4 hours each way means 8 hours in transit for roughly 5 usable hours in Cameron. The last bus from Tanah Rata back toward Ipoh typically departs around 4–5pm — you would need to leave Cameron in the late afternoon before the Mossy Forest hike is even an option, and well before the night market starts.

Minimum stay: 1 night. Better: 2 nights

Arrive by early afternoon → check in → afternoon at a tea farm → night market. Day 2: Mossy Forest hike in the morning, strawberry farms in the afternoon, bus out after lunch. That is a complete Cameron experience. A second night gives you a full day in between with no schedule pressure.

Where to Stay

Tanah Rata is the natural base — closest to the bus terminal, most guesthouse options, and the night market.

  • Budget (RM 50–100/night): Father's Guest House and Twin Pines Chalet are long-running backpacker options with good location in Tanah Rata. Clean, basic, well-maintained.
  • Mid-range (RM 150–250/night): Several small hotels and chalets within Tanah Rata. Most are family-run.
  • Heritage property: Cameron Highlands Resort (YTL Hotels), a restored colonial-era building. RM 400–600+/night. Worth it if the budget is there — the building and surroundings are exceptional by highland standards.

Book ahead on weekends and Malaysian public holidays — Cameron fills up fast and prices spike.

Getting Back to Penang

The return journey reverses the route: bus from Tanah Rata → Ipoh Amanjaya Terminal → bus or train from Ipoh → Penang Sentral. Same 4–4.5 hour total. Book the Tanah Rata → Ipoh leg at the bus station in Tanah Rata town or on Easybook.com the evening before.
