KL to Penang (and Back): Complete Transport Guide (2026)

KL to Penang is Malaysia's most-travelled intercity route. Every day, thousands of Malaysians and tourists make the journey — for a long weekend, a food pilgrimage, a medical appointment, or the start of a longer trip north. Four real options exist: fly, take the ETS train, take a bus, or drive. Your choice depends on budget, time, and what you want from the journey itself.

Best for:

This guide covers all four transport modes with real prices (in RM), journey times, and specific terminals. It covers the return trip too — Penang to KL is identical in most respects, with a few Penang-specific details worth knowing.

Travellers flying into KLIA, visitors planning a KL + Penang combo trip, anyone weighing whether to fly or take the train

Quick Comparison

MethodDurationPrice rangeFrequencyBest for
Flight50 min (+airport time)RM 50–20010+ dailyTime-constrained travellers
ETS Train3.5–4hRM 45–858 dailyBudget + comfort balance
Bus4.5–5hRM 30–50FrequentBudget travellers
Drive3.5hFuel + tolls ~RM 50Groups, car hire travellers

Door-to-door times are closer than the raw numbers suggest. A 50-minute flight from KLIA2 becomes a 3.5–4 hour journey once you include the Grab to the airport, check-in, and the Grab from Penang Airport to George Town. The ETS train to Butterworth plus the free ferry across gets you to Georgetown Jetty in roughly 4.5 hours from KL Sentral — with no airport stress in either direction.

AirAsia, Batik Air (formerly MASwings), and Firefly all operate the KL–Penang route. Most flights depart from KLIA2 (AirAsia) or KLIA main terminal (Batik Air, Firefly) and arrive at Penang International Airport (IATA code: PEN), located in Bayan Lepas on the south of the island, about 15km from George Town.

Flight time: 50 minutes. Block out 3.5–4 hours door-to-door from central KL to George Town.

Prices:

  • Budget (booked weeks ahead): RM 50–80 one way on AirAsia
  • Standard booking: RM 80–130
  • Last-minute: RM 150–200+

Book directly on AirAsia.com or Firefly.com.my, or use Skyscanner to compare across carriers. AirAsia fares often appear lower on the AirAsia app than on aggregator sites.

From Penang Airport into the city: Grab is the most straightforward option — RM 20–35 to George Town, roughly 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. There is no airport bus that runs directly to George Town. Metered taxis are available at the official counter; expect RM 45–60.

The Electric Train Service (ETS) is operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM). Trains depart from KL Sentral — the main rail hub in the centre of KL, directly connected to the LRT, MRT, Monorail, and KTM Komuter networks.

Trains terminate at Butterworth Station on the Penang mainland, not on Penang island itself. From Butterworth, the Penang Ferry crosses to Georgetown Jetty in about 5 minutes. The ferry costs RM 1.70 per person and runs continuously. It is part of the experience — the view of the George Town waterfront from the water is one of the best first impressions in Malaysian travel.

Journey time: ~3.5 hours KL Sentral to Butterworth. Add the ferry crossing: total ~4.5 hours to Georgetown Jetty.

Prices: RM 45–85 depending on class (Economy vs. Business) and booking window. Tickets are cheaper bought in advance.

Frequency: 8 departures daily from KL Sentral, starting around 7am. Last departure is mid-evening.

Book at: ktmb.com.my or 12Go Asia. KTMB's own site is the cheapest; 12Go Asia adds a small booking fee but has English-language support and clearer seat maps.

The Butterworth ferry is free from the Penang side

When returning from Penang to KL, the ferry from Georgetown Jetty to Butterworth is completely free — the toll is only charged on the KL-bound direction. Walk to Georgetown Jetty from most of George Town in 10–15 minutes.

Bus (Budget Option)

Multiple operators run coach services between KL and Penang. The main ones are Aeroline (premium), CatchExpress, KKKL, and Transnational. Buses depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), KL's central long-distance bus terminal, located next to Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT/MRT station — about 20 minutes from central KL by rail.

Journey time: 4.5–5 hours under normal conditions. Expect longer on Friday evenings and before public holidays when the North-South Expressway fills up.

Prices: RM 30–50 one way. Aeroline (reclining seats, snacks, boarding from KL city centre) charges closer to RM 50–70.

Drop-off in Penang: Most standard coaches drop at Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, on the south of Penang island. From Sungai Nibong, it is a RM 15–20 Grab ride to George Town, or a RapidPenang bus. Some services drop at Komtar bus terminal in the centre of George Town — confirm when booking.

Book via: 12Go Asia, Easybook.com, or directly with the bus operator. Tickets can also be bought same-day at TBS counters, though booking ahead guarantees a seat on popular routes.

Driving

The North-South Expressway (PLUS highway) connects KL to Penang in about 330km. From the Juru interchange near Butterworth, two bridge options cross to the island:

Penang Bridge — the older bridge, connects Butterworth (mainland) to Gelugor on the island, roughly 10 minutes from George Town. Toll is charged only at the Penang end (southbound, returning to KL): RM 7.50. Northbound (to Penang) is toll-free. Pay by Touch 'n Go or cash. This is the more convenient crossing for George Town.

Second Penang Bridge (Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge) — connects Batu Kawan (mainland, near IKEA Penang) to Batu Maung on the south of the island. Better if you're heading to the airport area or south Penang. Toll: RM 8.50 (charged at the Batu Kawan plaza, heading to the island).

Journey time: 3.5–4 hours in light traffic. On Friday evenings, public holidays, and school holiday periods, expect 5–6 hours or more. The North-South Expressway between Ipoh and Butterworth is the worst stretch for congestion.

Cost estimate:

  • Petrol: ~RM 35–45 each way (RON95, mid-size car)
  • Tolls (KL to Penang one way): ~RM 25–35 depending on route
  • Round trip: approximately RM 120–160 in fuel and tolls

Car rental from KL: RM 120–200/day for a standard car, available at KLIA and from companies like Hertz, Avis, and local operators. Return the car in Penang if you are not driving back.

Which Should You Choose?

Decision guide

Fly if: you want the fastest option, your arrival airport is KLIA or KLIA2, and you're happy spending RM 80–150 one way. Time saved over the train is real — but only if you're not adding airport transit time from the other side of KL.

Take the ETS train if: you're starting from central KL (near KL Sentral), you want a relaxed, scenic journey through Malaysian countryside, or you want to avoid the airport process entirely. The Butterworth ferry adds a genuine travel moment — not an inconvenience.

Take the bus if: you're on a tight budget and 5 hours is acceptable. The difference between bus and train in comfort is significant (train wins), but the price difference is real (bus is RM 15–40 cheaper).

Drive if: you're in a group of three or more (shared costs make it competitive), you want flexibility to stop at Ipoh for white coffee and half-boiled eggs, or you need a car in Penang.

Penang to Kuala Lumpur

The same four options run in reverse, with a few Penang-specific details worth knowing before you leave.

MethodDurationPrice rangeDeparture point
Flight50 min (+airport time)RM 60–150Penang International Airport (PEN)
ETS Train3.5–4hRM 85–120Butterworth Station (via free ferry)
Bus4–4.5hRM 35–55Sungai Nibong Terminal
Drive3.5–4hFuel + tolls ~RM 50Penang Bridge or Second Bridge

Fly: Penang International Airport (PEN) is in Bayan Lepas, about 15km south of George Town. Grab from the heritage zone to the airport costs RM 20–35, journey time 30–40 minutes. Allow at least 1.5 hours from George Town to the gate. Same airlines as the inbound: AirAsia, Batik Air, Firefly. Return fares: RM 60–150 — book early for the lowest prices.

ETS Train: The train does not depart from the island. Walk to Georgetown Jetty (10–15 minutes on foot from the heritage zone, or RM 8–12 by Grab) and take the Penang Ferry to Butterworth. The ferry is free from the Penang side — the toll is only charged northbound (arriving from Butterworth to the island). At Butterworth Station, trains to KL Sentral run 8 times daily. Price: RM 85–120 depending on class and booking window. Journey time: 3.5–4 hours to KL Sentral. Book at ktmb.com.my or 12Go Asia.

Bus: Long-distance buses to KL depart from Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, on the south of Penang island. Grab from George Town to Sungai Nibong costs RM 15–20. Some services also depart from Komtar bus terminal in central George Town — confirm when booking. Operators: CatchExpress, KKKL, Transnasional. Journey time: 4–4.5 hours. Price: RM 35–55. Book on Easybook.com or at the Sungai Nibong counter.

Drive: The Penang Bridge toll going south (returning to KL) is free — you paid RM 7.50 when entering the island; nothing is charged on the way out. The Second Penang Bridge also charges only on the northbound (island-bound) direction; southbound is free. From the Juru interchange, the North-South Expressway runs south toward KL. Allow 3.5–4 hours in light traffic; 5–6 hours on Friday evenings and before public holidays.

Last KTM departure from Butterworth — check before you check out

The final ETS train from Butterworth to KL departs mid-evening. If you have a late checkout or a farewell meal running long, check the schedule at ktmb.com.my before you commit to the train. Missing the last service means an unplanned overnight or an expensive last-minute flight.

Getting from the Airport or Train Station into Penang City

Arriving by plane at Penang International Airport: Grab is the best option — RM 20–35 to George Town, 30–40 minutes. No direct bus to George Town; RapidPenang Route 401E runs to Komtar but is slow and involves a change.

Arriving by train at Butterworth Station: The Penang Ferry terminal is a 3-minute walk from Butterworth Station. Ferries run continuously day and night — including overnight. Georgetown Jetty (the arrival point on the island) is in the heart of the old city, walking distance from most heritage-zone guesthouses.

Aggregating train and bus tickets

12Go Asia lists both KTM ETS trains and coach buses on the same search. Useful for comparing journey times and prices side by side before committing. Tickets can be booked directly through the platform with English-language support. For trains, the KTMB website is the cheapest source — no booking fee.
