Mid-Autumn Festival — Lantern Night in Penang
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls in September or October on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Penang's Clan Jetties and heritage district glow with lanterns at night — mooncakes, lion dances, and family gatherings mark the full moon celebration.
The Mid-Autumn Festival (also Mooncake Festival or Zhongqiu Jie) falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month — typically September or early October — when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. In Penang's large Chinese community, the festival is celebrated with mooncakes (dense, sweet pastries filled with lotus paste, salted egg yolk, or mixed nuts), lantern processions, and family gatherings under the full moon. The Clan Jetties in George Town transform at night: families carry paper lanterns along the wooden jetties over the water, creating a golden reflection on the sea. The Cheah Kongsi and other clan associations on Armenian Street and Cannon Square celebrate with lantern-hanging, lion dances, and mooncake distribution. Children carry traditional cylindrical candle lanterns through neighbourhoods after dark. Penang's Mid-Autumn Festival is quieter but more atmospheric than Kuala Lumpur's — the heritage district setting, the jetty lanterns on water, and the clan association traditions preserve aspects of the festival that have disappeared elsewhere.
Insider Tips
- 1The Clan Jetties at Weld Quay are the most atmospheric spot in Penang for Mid-Autumn — arrive by 7pm on the night of the full moon
- 2Mooncake shops on Penang Road and Chulia Street sell special-edition mooncakes from 2-3 weeks before the festival
- 3The Cheah Kongsi on Armenian Street typically holds a public lantern event on the evening of the festival
- 4Traditional wax candle lanterns are still used by older families — the flickering lanterns by the water at the jetties are unforgettable
