By air. The direct Penang–Langkawi passenger ferry from Swettenham Pier was discontinued during the pandemic and has not resumed, so the standard hop is a 35–40 minute flight (AirAsia or Firefly, from about RM100). To go by sea you travel overland first — bus to Kuala Kedah (~1.5h) or Kuala Perlis, then the ferry across.
Can I do a day trip to Hat Yai from Penang?
Yes! It's a 2-hour drive or 3-hour bus ride. Leave early morning, enjoy Thai massage, shopping, and food, then return by evening. Bring your passport for the border crossing.
What is the best way to travel to Ipoh from Penang?
The ETS train is the most comfortable option (2 hours, RM27-59). Buses are cheaper (RM15-20) but take similar time. Driving takes about 2 hours via the North-South Expressway.
