Express Bus (Recommended for most travellers)
The cheapest and most flexible option. Coaches depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in KL every 30–60 minutes from 7am to midnight. Journey time is 4–5 hours depending on traffic.
Booking: Easybook, BusOnlineTicket, or CatchThatBus apps. Book a day or two ahead on weekends.
Which company: Konsortium Transnasional, Handal Indah, and Transnasional are the major operators. Differences are minimal — all have AC, reclining seats, and toilet stops.
Arrival: most buses arrive at Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal or Komtar bus terminal in Penang. From Sungai Nibong, Rapid Penang buses and Grab connect to George Town (20–30 minutes).
Cost: RM35–55 one way. Weekend and holiday prices are higher.
ETS Train (KTM)
KL Sentral to Butterworth station (on the mainland, not the island). From Butterworth, a 10-minute ferry crossing gets you to George Town (RM1.20). Total travel time from KL Sentral to George Town: about 4 hours.
Booking: KTM website or Grab app. Book at least a day ahead for weekend trains.
Journey: pleasant — the train runs through palm oil plantations and small towns. More comfortable than the bus, less waiting.
Cost: RM59–85 depending on class and advance booking.
Flight (AirAsia / Firefly / Batik Air)
Flight time is 40 minutes but factor in: check-in, security, boarding, and the transfer from Penang International Airport to George Town (30–45 minutes by Rapid Penang bus or RM25–35 by Grab).
Best case: 3.5 hours total from KL hotel to George Town hotel. Worst case: 5+ hours if you have KLIA transit connections or traffic.
When it makes sense: when flights are under RM80 (common if booked 2–4 weeks ahead), and you value the 40-minute journey time.
Airport: Penang International Airport is in Bayan Lepas, about 20km from George Town.
Self-Drive
The North-South Expressway from KL to Penang is one of the best highways in Malaysia. Journey time is 3.5–4 hours without traffic.
Toll: approximately RM30–40 one way on the expressway. Fuel: roughly RM25–35 depending on car and fuel prices. Total cost: RM55–75 one way.
Parking in George Town: challenging and expensive in the heritage zone. Most hotels have paid parking (RM8–15/day). Consider parking at a hotel on the outskirts and taking local transport.
Practical tips
- For the ferry from Butterworth to George Town: it runs every 20–30 minutes. The journey itself (looking back at the waterfront) is worth doing at least once.
- Long-distance Grab is available but expensive. Best used if you have a lot of luggage or need door-to-door.
- Night buses from TBS depart around 10pm–midnight and arrive early morning. Fine for saving a night's accommodation but arrival at 4am with luggage is inconvenient.
