Getting Around Penang: Grab, Buses, Ferries & Everything Else Explained
Grab: The Default for Most Visitors
Grab is by far the easiest way to get around Penang if you are not planning to walk. The app works seamlessly across the island, prices are displayed upfront, and the drivers are reliable. A Grab from Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi (30 km) costs roughly RM 25–35 depending on time of day. George Town to Penang Hill base station is around RM 12–18.
Download the Grab app before you arrive and add a payment method. Cash works too if you prefer — select "cash" when booking.
When Grab gets slow: Friday and Saturday evenings between 6 and 9 pm, and during major festivals (Chinese New Year, Hari Raya). Surge pricing kicks in — wait 10 minutes or walk to a restaurant first.
Rapid Penang Buses: Cheap, Slow, But Worth Knowing
Rapid Penang runs a network of air-conditioned buses across the island. Fares are flat at RM 1.50 regardless of distance — some of the cheapest public transport in Malaysia.
The most useful routes for visitors:
- Route 101 / 102: George Town to Batu Ferringhi (every 15–20 minutes, takes 45–60 minutes)
- Route 204: George Town to Penang Hill base (Ayer Itam), roughly 30 minutes
- Route 301: Komtar to Balik Pulau
Buses can be slow in traffic. The George Town to Batu Ferringhi journey that takes 25 minutes by Grab can take 50 minutes or more by bus at peak hours. But for budget travellers doing Penang Hill or the beaches, the bus is perfectly fine.
Where to catch buses: The main interchange is at Komtar in central George Town. Most buses also stop along Pengkalan Weld (the waterfront road).
The Penang Ferry: Butterworth to George Town
If you are arriving from the mainland by train (KTM to Butterworth station), the Penang Ferry is the classic way across the strait. The crossing takes 15–20 minutes and costs RM 1.20 (George Town to Butterworth) — the Butterworth to George Town direction is currently free.
The ferry runs from around 5:30 am to 11:30 pm with departures roughly every 20–30 minutes. The Butterworth Ferry Terminal is a 5-minute walk from Butterworth KTM station.
Renting a Car or Scooter
Renting a car (around RM 80–120/day) makes sense if you want to explore Balik Pulau, the rural southwest, or make multiple stops in a single day without waiting for Grab.
Scooter rental is popular with solo travellers — around RM 35–50 per day. You need a valid motorcycle licence. Traffic in George Town is dense but manageable; the outer roads are smooth and light.
Getting From the Airport
Penang International Airport (PEN) is in Bayan Lepas, about 16 km south of George Town. A Grab to Georgetown costs roughly RM 25–35. There is also a Rapid Penang Route 401 bus that runs to Komtar for RM 4, though it can be slow with luggage.
