Medical Tourism in Penang from Bengaluru
A practical travel guide for Bengaluru patients heading to Penang — routing options, hospital choices, visa-free entry, and logistics on the ground.
Penang is a long-established medical travel destination in Southeast Asia. Private hospitals are regulated by the Malaysian Medical Council, English is the common language in clinical settings, and the cost of consultations and procedures is typically lower than equivalent private care in Singapore or Western markets. For Bengaluru patients and the working professionals who often travel with them, it is a familiar professional environment with shorter waiting times than many private hospitals back home.
One thing to be upfront about: there is currently no direct flight between Bengaluru and Penang. Penang state has been pursuing a direct route, but it has not launched yet. In the meantime, most Bengaluru patients route via Chennai (IndiGo has operated a direct Chennai-Penang service since December 2024) or via Kuala Lumpur (multiple carriers, frequent service). The rest of this guide covers those routings, the major hospital options, visa-free entry for Indian nationals, and the practical logistics on the ground.
Flying Bengaluru to Penang
Two practical two-leg routings today, plus a direct route that is in active discussion but not yet operating. Schedules and fares change frequently — book directly with the airline for current days, fares and timings.
IndiGo (BLR → MAA → PEN)
Bengaluru (BLR) is a short hop from Chennai (MAA), and IndiGo operates a direct Chennai-Penang service that launched on 21 December 2024. This is the simplest two-leg routing for many Bengaluru patients — a domestic IndiGo flight to Chennai, then the direct international leg to Penang. Schedules and fares change frequently — book directly with IndiGo for your travel dates.
AirAsia / Malaysia Airlines / IndiGo (BLR → KUL → PEN)
Bengaluru (BLR) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is served by multiple carriers including AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo and Batik Air with frequent daily service. From KL, the onward leg to Penang (PEN) is a short domestic hop with many options through the day. Useful when the Chennai routing is full or when you want lounge access and connection flexibility at a larger hub.
Bengaluru – Penang direct (not yet operating)
Penang state and its tourism partners have been actively pursuing a direct Bengaluru-Penang air link given the size of the Bengaluru medical and corporate travel market. As of the date this page was last updated, no direct service is operating yet. We will update this page when an airline confirms a launch date. In the meantime, the Chennai and KL routings above are the practical options.
Penang International Airport (PEN) is in Bayan Lepas, about 16 km from George Town. Grab and metered taxis are available landside, and most hospital international patient services teams can arrange an airport pickup if you request it in advance. For everything on direct routes into Penang, see Direct Flights to Penang.
Why Bengaluru Patients Consider Penang
A few practical reasons Penang shows up on shortlists for Bengaluru patients and the professionals travelling with them. None of these are claims that Penang is uniquely the best choice — they are simply factors worth weighing alongside other destinations.
Regulated private healthcare standards
Private hospitals in Malaysia are licensed by the Ministry of Health and doctors are registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). Several Penang hospitals also hold international accreditations (e.g. JCI, MSQH) — worth checking on the hospital’s own website as part of your due diligence.
English is the working language in clinical settings
Consultations, discharge summaries, prescriptions and patient records are produced in English. There is no translation layer between you, the consultant and the hospital paperwork — a meaningful advantage compared with destinations where English is not the clinical default.
Cost positioning between Indian metros and Singapore
Penang private care is typically priced below Singapore and well below comparable Western private rates. Costs are higher than government hospitals in India but often competitive with Bengaluru’s top private chains for complex procedures, especially once you factor in shorter waiting times and the option to combine treatment with a short stay.
Familiar professional environment
George Town is a UNESCO-listed multicultural city with a large Indian-origin community and a long-established South Indian quarter (Little India). Vegetarian dining is widely available, Indian-style breakfast options are easy to find at hotel buffets, and the overall pace will feel familiar to anyone coming from a major Indian metro.
Hospitals to Consider
Four Penang private hospitals that handle a meaningful share of international patients. This is a starting shortlist, not a ranking — the right hospital depends on your specific procedure, consultant fit and budget. See the full directory at Penang Hospitals.
Island Hospital
Long-established private hospital with one of the largest international patient volumes in Penang. Multi-specialty: cardiac, oncology, orthopaedics and general surgery. Dedicated international patient coordinators familiar with Indian patient paperwork.
Hospital details →Gleneagles Penang
Part of the Gleneagles / IHH Healthcare network (same group that operates well-known hospitals across Asia). Strong reputation for cardiology, oncology and minimally invasive surgery. International patient services are well developed.
Hospital details →Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre
One of Penang's older established private hospitals with a wide specialist roster. Particularly known for orthopaedics, cardiology and general surgery. Tends to be a value option compared with the international chain hospitals.
Hospital details →Penang Adventist Hospital
Not-for-profit mission hospital with a long-standing reputation in cardiology, cardiac surgery and health screening. Quieter pace and a strong patient-care ethos relative to the larger commercial chains.

Executive Health Screening
Full executive checkup packages — a common reason Bengaluru corporate travellers combine a short trip with a thorough screening.
Cardiac Care
Diagnostic angiography, stenting and bypass programmes across the major Penang private hospitals.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Joint replacement, sports injury and spine work — long-standing specialty among Penang surgeons.
Dental
Implants, crowns, bridges and cosmetic dentistry — quick-turnaround visits are common for working professionals.

A Practical Note on Costs
We deliberately do not publish fixed procedure prices on this page. Quoted costs depend on the hospital, the consultant, the specifics of your case, the length of inpatient stay and any complications. For an indicative range before you start contacting hospitals, use our cost calculator.
Always get a written quote before you travel. Email each hospital’s international patient services team with your case summary and recent reports, and ask for an itemised estimate covering the procedure, hospital stay, consultant fees and likely incidentals. Keep the written quote with your travel documents — immigration officers occasionally ask about the purpose of medical visits.
Check your insurance. If you hold international medical insurance, confirm with your insurer whether Penang private hospitals are within network and whether the policy covers planned (elective) treatment abroad. Some Indian corporate policies cover treatment in Malaysia; others do not. The insurance guide walks through what to confirm.
Indian Rupees are not accepted in Malaysia. Hospitals, hotels and merchants quote and bill in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR / RM). Most international Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards work at hospitals and ATMs. You can also bring US Dollars or Singapore Dollars and change to Ringgit at moneychangers in George Town (Lebuh Pantai, Komtar) or at the airport — check the day’s reference rate at bnm.gov.my (Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank) before you change.
Visa & Entry
Indian nationals can currently enter Malaysia visa-free for tourism for stays of up to 30 days. The federal Government of Malaysia has extended this visa-free arrangement to 31 December 2026. Always confirm the current rules at imi.gov.my (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia) before you fly.
Passport validity: at least six months’ validity from your date of entry into Malaysia. This is the standard requirement and is enforced at check-in by airlines.
Documentation for medical visits: while you can enter visa-free as a tourist, it is worth carrying your hospital invitation letter (or appointment confirmation), recent medical reports, and a copy of the written cost estimate. These are occasionally requested at immigration and help speed entry. For stays longer than 30 days or any treatment that exceeds the visa-free window, contact the hospital’s international patient services team — they can advise on the appropriate medical visa pathway.
For a fuller walk-through, see the visa & entry guide.
On the Ground in Penang
Airport transfer. Penang International Airport (PEN) is in Bayan Lepas, about 16 km from George Town — typically 25–40 minutes by car depending on traffic. Grab (the regional ride-hailing app, works identically to Uber) is the simplest option and prices are visible upfront. Metered taxis are also available at the official airport taxi counter landside. Most hospital international patient services teams will arrange a pickup if you give them your arrival flight details in advance.
Where to stay. Most Bengaluru patients pick a hotel or serviced apartment within George Town for proximity to consultants and dining. The dedicated recovery stays page lists options geared specifically for post-procedure recovery (lift access, in-house meals, longer-stay rates).
Vegetarian dining. George Town’s Little India quarter (around Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Penang) is the densest concentration of South Indian vegetarian restaurants. Hospital cafeterias offer vegetarian options, and most hotel buffets include an Indian breakfast section. For strict dietary requirements (Jain, no onion / no garlic, satvik), look for restaurants in Little India and confirm specifics directly.
Language. English is widely spoken in clinical settings, at hotels and by Grab drivers. You will not need to learn Bahasa Melayu for a short medical visit. Tamil and Hindi are also commonly spoken among the Indian-origin community in Penang.
Communications. Penang International Airport has prepaid tourist SIM kiosks (Maxis, Celcom, Digi) landside; bring your passport. Roaming is also straightforward with Indian carriers if you prefer to keep your existing number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a direct flight from Bengaluru to Penang?
Not as of May 2026. Penang state and its tourism partners have been actively pursuing a direct Bengaluru-Penang air link, but no airline has launched the route yet. In the meantime, the two practical options are via Chennai (IndiGo runs a direct Chennai-Penang service that launched on 21 December 2024) or via Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo and Batik Air all serve Bengaluru-KL with frequent daily flights, then a short hop on to Penang). We will update this page if and when a direct service is announced.
Do I need a visa to visit Penang as an Indian passport holder?
Indian nationals can currently enter Malaysia visa-free for tourism for stays of up to 30 days. The federal Government of Malaysia has extended this visa-free arrangement to 31 December 2026. Always confirm the current rules at imi.gov.my (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia) before you fly, and make sure your passport has at least six months' validity from your date of entry. If you are travelling for medical reasons, keep your hospital invitation letter and any treatment documents accessible — immigration officers occasionally ask.
Will I be able to find vegetarian food in Penang?
Easily. Penang has a sizeable Indian-origin community and a long-standing vegetarian eating tradition. George Town's Little India area along Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Penang has many South Indian vegetarian restaurants, including options that are pure veg and Jain-friendly. Hospital cafeterias typically offer vegetarian options, and most hotel breakfasts include vegetarian Indian dishes. If you have strict dietary requirements (no onion / no garlic, Jain, satvik), look for restaurants in the Little India quarter and confirm specifics directly with the restaurant.
Is Penang a good place for an executive health screening visit?
It is one of the common reasons Bengaluru professionals visit. Most major Penang private hospitals offer structured executive screening packages (typically a half-day or full-day programme covering cardiac, oncology, metabolic and general health markers). The advantage of combining a screening with a short Penang trip is that you receive results, review with the consultant, and have time to discuss any follow-up — all in one trip. Book a screening slot in advance and confirm whether the package price is inclusive of consultations and reports.
Will language be a barrier?
English is widely spoken in Penang, particularly in private hospitals, hotels, taxis and most retail and dining outlets. Penang is a multilingual society where English serves as the common business language. You will not need to learn Bahasa Melayu for a short medical visit. Bengaluru visitors familiar with the English-speaking professional environment of an Indian metro will feel at home in George Town.
Can I use Indian Rupees in Penang?
No. Indian Rupees (INR) are not accepted by Penang hospitals, hotels or merchants. You will need Malaysian Ringgit (MYR / RM). Most international Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards work at hospitals and ATMs across Penang. You can also bring US Dollars or Singapore Dollars and change to Ringgit at moneychangers in George Town (Lebuh Pantai, Komtar) or at Penang International Airport, where rates are competitive. Check the day's reference rate at bnm.gov.my (Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank) before you change.
How do I decide which Penang hospital is right for me?
Start with the procedure or specialty you need, then shortlist two or three hospitals that have a strong track record in that area. Send your medical reports to each hospital’s international patient services team and ask for a written estimate covering the procedure, hospital stay, consultant fees and likely incidentals. Compare not only the headline price but also the consultant’s experience with your specific case. Our /medical/hospitals directory has detailed pages for each major hospital, and the /medical/cost-calculator gives an indicative range to anchor your expectations before you contact the hospitals.
How do I get a written quote before I travel?
Email the international patient services team at the hospitals on your shortlist with: a brief case history, your most recent scans and reports (ideally as PDFs), and a list of the questions you want addressed in the quote. Reputable Penang hospitals respond within a few working days with an itemised estimate. Always get the quote in writing before you book flights or accommodation — verbal phone estimates are useful for initial scoping but should not be relied on for budgeting. Keep a copy of the written quote with your travel documents in case immigration asks about the purpose of your visit.
Information on this page is general travel guidance for medical visitors from Bengaluru and is current as at the date of publishing. Visit Penang does not provide medical advice; clinical decisions should be made with a licensed consultant. Visa rules, flight schedules and exchange rates change frequently — verify with imi.gov.my, the airline, and bnm.gov.my before you travel.
