Entry rules for Indian citizens
Visa-free until 31 December 2026
Malaysia Immigration lists India among the countries that normally need a visa, with the note: “India citizen: visa exempts until 31st December 2026.” How long you may stay is set by the officer when you arrive.
Travelling in 2027? Check first
When we checked, Immigration had not published anything about the exemption after 31 December 2026. If it is not extended, Indian couples would need a visa again; Immigration also runs an eNTRI page for Indian nationals. Re-check the official page before you book 2027 dates.
Digital arrival card
Foreign visitors register a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online before arriving. It is free on the official Immigration site.
Passport
Carry a passport that is valid for your whole stay, and a return or onward ticket. Immigration sets the rules at entry.
When to go
The winter wedding season
The Confederation of All India Traders tracked the 2025 wedding season as 1 November to 14 December, with an estimated 46 lakh weddings across India. Honeymoons that follow a November or December wedding land in Penang's driest stretch, December to March.
Deepavali in Penang
Deepavali is a public holiday in Penang on 28 October 2027. Little India in George Town is busiest and brightest in the days before it.
Weather
December to March is Penang's driest stretch and the classic honeymoon window. April–May and September–November are the wettest months, with afternoon downpours, though rain rarely lasts all day.

Is there a direct flight from India to Penang?
Yes, from Chennai. IndiGo has flown Chennai to Penang daily since 21 December 2024, about 3 hours 45 minutes in the air on the schedule it announced. From other Indian cities, connect through Chennai or Kuala Lumpur. Check current times on goindigo.in.
Do Indian citizens need a visa for a Penang honeymoon?
Not until 31 December 2026. Malaysia Immigration states that Indian citizens are visa-exempt until that date. For 2027 travel, check the Immigration website before booking, because no extension had been published when we checked on 6 October 2026. All foreign visitors also fill in the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online before arrival.
When should Indian couples plan a Penang honeymoon?
Many Indian weddings fall in the November to mid-December season, and Penang is at its driest from December to March, so the timing often lines up. Deepavali is a Penang public holiday, which makes Little India especially lively around it.
Is vegetarian food easy to find in Penang?
Yes. George Town has a long-established Little India with South Indian vegetarian restaurants, and vegetarian options are common across the island. See our vegetarian food guide for places to start.
