Since July 2025, Chinese citizens can visit Malaysia visa-free for up to 30 days, and several Chinese cities fly direct to Penang. Here are the routes and rules with their official sources, plus what is and isn't confirmed yet for 2027.

Entry rules for Chinese citizens

Visa-free for up to 30 days

The China–Malaysia Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement came into force on 17 July 2025. Holders of ordinary Chinese passports can enter Malaysia without a visa for tourism, family visits and other short purposes, for up to 30 days per stay and no more than 90 days in any 180 days.

When you still need a visa

Staying longer than 30 days, or coming to work, study or for media work, needs the right visa before you travel. Malaysia Immigration keeps its own FAQ on the agreement.

Digital arrival card

Foreign visitors register a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online before arriving. It is free on the official Immigration site.

When to go

Spring Festival 2027

Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. It is a public holiday in Penang too, and George Town's Chinese clan houses and temples are at their most festive.

Official 2027 days off: not out yet

China's exact days off for 2027, including the Spring Festival and National Day (1 October) breaks, are set by a State Council notice. The 2026 notice was published in early November 2025; the 2027 one had not been published when we checked. We will add the dates once it is.

Mid-Autumn in Penang

The Mid-Autumn (Lantern) Festival is expected on 15 September 2027 (lunar calendar, to be confirmed). Penang celebrates it with lanterns and mooncakes.

Weather

December to March is Penang's driest stretch, which includes the Spring Festival. April–May and September–November are the wettest months, with afternoon downpours.
