Golf in Penang: Courses, Tee Times, and What to Expect

Golf in Penang sits at an interesting intersection: colonial-era clubs that predate independence, newer resort-style courses built for the export-processing zone's expatriate community, and green fees that feel reasonable if you're coming from Singapore or Australia.

The island doesn't have a globally ranked course, but what it has is variety — a flat coastal layout, a hill course with Penang Hill views, a private members club with historical character, and a more affordable public-access option. All within 30 minutes of George Town.

Best for:

Golfers visiting Penang who want to play one or two rounds as part of a broader trip, and expats looking for regular membership options. Not a dedicated golf destination — but a solid addition to a holiday.

The Courses

Penang Golf Club (Bukit Jambul Country Club)

The most prestigious course on the island and the most challenging. An 18-hole par-72 layout at Bukit Jambul in Bayan Lepas, 20 minutes from Georgetown by Grab (RM25–35).

The course is part of the Bukit Jambul Country Club complex — a private club with full facilities including swimming pool, tennis, squash, and multiple food and beverage outlets. Visitor green fees are available but restricted; book via the club directly.

Course type: Parkland. Tree-lined fairways, hilly terrain on the back nine, occasional views to Penang Hill. Difficulty: Moderate to challenging. The 17th and 18th holes are consistently ranked among the toughest finishing holes in Peninsular Malaysia. Green fees (visitor): RM180–260 weekdays / RM250–350 weekends and public holidays. Caddy: Compulsory. Fee approximately RM60 per bag.

Booking as a visitor

Bukit Jambul has a tiered guest policy — members can bring guests freely, but unaccompanied visitor tee times are limited and require advance booking (minimum 3 days in advance, subject to availability). Call directly: +604-641 2288. Online tee times via third-party platforms are not always accurate.

Penang Golf Resort (Relau)

A semi-private 18-hole course in Relau, south Penang island. More accessible to visitors than BJCC, with easier tee time availability and slightly lower green fees. The course is well-maintained, generally flat, and less challenging than Bukit Jambul.

Course type: Parkland. Relatively flat. Water features on 8 holes. Difficulty: Beginner-friendly to moderate. Green fees: RM120–180 weekdays / RM180–250 weekends. Caddy: Optional.

Island-wide

Applies across Penang

Penang Golf Resort is the most visitor-friendly course on the island for tee time availability. It's in Relau, 25 minutes from Georgetown by Grab (RM20–30). The clubhouse food is decent — the nasi lemak at the halfway house is recommended by regulars.

Northam Golf Course (Georgetown)

Penang's oldest golf facility, originally established during the British colonial era and now a 9-hole course in a location that would cost an extraordinary amount to develop from scratch — on the main island, close to the Gurney Drive waterfront, surrounded by high-rise development.

Course type: 9-hole layout. Short, flat, mature trees. More suitable for practice and casual play than serious competition. Difficulty: Low. Par 34. Good for beginners and warm-up rounds. Green fees: RM50–80 (9 holes). Weekend rates slightly higher. Access: Members-only for the main 18-hole section; the 9-hole is accessible to day guests.

The Penang Sports Club (adjacent facility) operates a social membership that provides access to Northam and various recreational facilities. Monthly membership is RM200–400 depending on category.

Penang Turf Club Golf Course

A 9-hole course on the grounds of the Penang Turf Club in Air Itam. Unconventional layout — it shares the grounds with the horse-racing track, which means tee times are structured around race days.

Course type: 9-hole. Flat, open. Track winds around the outer edge. Access: Open to non-members during non-race periods. Call ahead. Green fees: RM60–90.

Worth playing for the experience — there's something unusual about putting with a horse track in the background. Don't expect a premium course condition.

When to Play

Penang's climate makes early morning golf essential year-round. By 11am the heat is significant; by 2pm it's genuinely difficult to play comfortably.

MonthConditionsNotes
Jan–FebCooler, drierBest months. Northeast monsoon largely past.
Mar–AprWarm, dryGood. Least crowd pressure on tee times.
May–JunHotEarly morning only.
Jul–AugHot, school holidaysBusy weekends. Book well ahead.
Sep–OctIntermittent rainMorning rounds usually clear; afternoon can be wet.
Nov–DecMonsoon seasonHeavy rain possible. Courses may close after storms. Course conditions variable.

Optimal window: 6:30am–10:30am year-round.

Monsoon season

The northeast monsoon (November to February) affects the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia more than Penang, but the island does see increased rainfall from November to January. Courses stay open but cart paths may be muddy and course conditions variable after heavy rain. Morning rounds before 10am are safest.

Equipment

All four courses have club rental available — expect RM50–80 per round for a basic set. Bukit Jambul has the best quality rental clubs; Northam's rental stock is aging.

If you're travelling with your own clubs, most airlines allow checked golf bags (count as sporting equipment). Check the airline's policy before assuming this is free — AirAsia charges RM30–50 each way, while Malaysia Airlines includes it in checked allowance on some fares.

Combined Golf and Food Itinerary

Penang is at its best when golf is combined with eating well. After your round, explore the hawker centres nearby or check the Penang Tourism Board for current events coinciding with your visit. A suggested day:

6:00am — Grab to Bukit Jambul Country Club 6:30am — First tee time (before the heat) 11:00am — Finish 18 holes, cold shower, early lunch at club restaurant 1:00pm — Grab back toward Georgetown 2:00pm — Rest (essential in this heat) 5:30pm — Gurney Drive Hawker Centre for assam laksa and char kway teow 8:00pm — Penang Road Teochew Cendol for dessert

Island-wide

Applies across Penang

The distance from Georgetown to Bukit Jambul (and back) doesn't lend itself to walking — use Grab both ways. The return Grab after a round is often RM5–10 cheaper than the inbound, as the Bayan Lepas industrial zone generates plenty of supply. Budget RM50–70 total for transport on a golf day.

Membership Costs

For expats or long-stay visitors considering membership:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dress code? Yes at all four courses. Collared shirts, non-denim shorts or trousers. No t-shirts, jeans, or flip-flops. Bukit Jambul enforces this most strictly. Most courses have a shop where you can buy compliant gear if needed.

Can I book tee times online? Penang Golf Resort has an online booking system. Use Grab to get between George Town and the courses. Bukit Jambul requires a phone call. Northam and the Turf Club are walk-in or call-ahead. GolfNow covers some Malaysian courses but doesn't reliably include all Penang options — call the club directly to confirm.

Are caddies available at all courses? Yes. Caddies are compulsory at Bukit Jambul (RM60/bag). Optional at others (RM50–60/bag). Tipping RM20–30 on top of the stated caddy fee is standard for a good caddy.

Is there a driving range in Penang? Yes. Penang Golf Resort has a covered driving range open to the public (RM20–30 per session, clubs rental extra). There's also a small range at the Penang Sports Club.
