Kek Seng has anchored a corner of Jalan Penang since 1903, making it one of George Town's oldest surviving coffee shops. It is best known for ais kacang — a mound of shaved ice with red beans, sweet corn, jelly and rose syrup — crowned with two scoops of the house-made durian ice cream that regulars come specifically for. The high-ceilinged old kopitiam also hosts long-running hawker stalls serving char koay teow, Hokkien mee and lor bak, so you can pair the dessert with a savoury plate. It's a nostalgic, no-frills slice of old Penang.
