gēn 根 — Mandarin for 'roots' — is a contemporary fine-dining restaurant in George Town founded in 2018 by owner-chef Johnson Wong, who builds his cooking around Malaysian heritage flavours and the country's own seasonal produce. It serves a multi-course tasting menu that leans heavily on local ingredients, especially fish and seafood, reworked through a modern lens; a signature touch is T'lur, a Malaysian caviar served at the table. Dinner is an unhurried two-to-three-hour affair, set within The Prestige Hotel on Gat Lebuh Gereja. The restaurant was placed in the Top 100 of Asia's Best Restaurants in 2021.
