Deen Maju Nasi Kandar

Deen Maju is one of George Town's most famous nasi kandar institutions — a no-frills shop on Jalan Gurdwara where Penangites happily queue in the heat for a plate. The draw is kuah banjir: rice 'flooded' with a mix of curry sauces and piled with your choice of lauk. Regulars come for the crispy ayam goreng (fried chicken), kari sotong (squid curry) and daging hitam (beef in a dark, sweet-savoury sauce). It is fast, generous and unmistakably Penang Indian-Muslim cooking; go early or expect a wait at peak meal times.
