Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery turned a humble Bishop Street shophouse into one of Penang's two Michelin Star restaurants, awarded in the inaugural 2023 guide. Chef Beh Gaik Lean — 'Auntie' to everyone — cooks the Nyonya (Peranakan) dishes she grew up with, family recipes built on spice pastes pounded from scratch. The kitchen runs with quiet precision: curry kapitan in a thick, fragrant gravy, assam prawns, gulai tumis, and the labour-intensive nasi ulam that few places still make. Opened in 2013, it had a devoted local following long before the inspectors arrived. Reservations carry a RM200 deposit; tables of three or fewer are walk-in only, first-come first-served.
