Penang Yosakoi Parade
Free annual Japanese Yosakoi dance parade at the Esplanade — colourful street performances with teams from Japan and local Malaysian troupes at the George Town waterfront.
The Penang Yosakoi Parade is an annual free public event that brings Japanese Yosakoi dance to the streets of George Town. Teams of performers in colourful traditional and contemporary costumes dance to energetic Yosakoi music at the Esplanade and Padang Kota Lama — the same open ground that has hosted public celebrations in Penang since the colonial era. Yosakoi is a popular Japanese street-dance style that originated in Kochi, Japan in 1954 and has since spread globally. The Penang edition features performing groups from Japan alongside local Malaysian troupes. The parade is free to watch and draws significant crowds — particularly families and spectators who gather along the Esplanade waterfront. The combination of Japanese cultural performance with the backdrop of George Town colonial architecture makes this one of the more distinctive events in Penang calendar.
