Penang Street Art — Ernest Zacharevic Murals, 2012

In 2012, Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic painted interactive murals in George Town that went globally viral. The street art programme transformed the UNESCO heritage zone into one of Asia's best outdoor art destinations.

Cultural

In 2012, the Penang State Government and the George Town Festival commissioned Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic to create interactive steel-rod sculptures and painted murals across the heritage core. Zacharevic's first commissioned mural — 'Children on a Bicycle' on Armenian Street — showed two children riding a real bicycle welded to the wall of a shophouse. The photograph went viral, making George Town one of the world's most-photographed cities. Within months, the city attracted visitors who came specifically to find the eight original murals. The street art programme expanded significantly after 2012, with works by dozens of local and international artists. Today over 100 pieces of outdoor art are mapped across George Town, making it one of Asia's richest street art destinations. The murals gave the post-UNESCO city a visual identity that felt organic and participatory rather than museified.
