Birdwatching Season — Penang National Park & Penang Hill
Penang Hill and Penang National Park offer excellent birdwatching year-round. October to March is peak season for migratory species; the Penang Hill laughingthrush (endemic) is visible at the summit year-round.
Penang is a significant stop on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, and the island receives migratory bird species from October to March. Penang Hill (830m) and the Penang National Park (Teluk Bahang end) are the two best birdwatching locations on the island. Penang Hill is home to the Penang Hill laughingthrush (Garrulax milleti — a species found only here and in a few localities in Southeast Asia), Asian paradise flycatcher, sultan tit, and several endemic Sundaland species. The summit's cloud forest receives migrating birds from October through March including Siberian and Himalayan species. The Penang National Park hosts sea eagles, hornbills, kingfishers, and the rare black-naped monarch along the forest trails to Pantai Kerachut. The annual Penang Raptor Watch at Penang Hill (September-November) is a dedicated migration watch event. For casual birdwatchers, the trail from the Penang Hill summit to the Moon Gate is excellent year-round, with resident species visible most mornings.
Insider Tips
- 1The Penang Hill Heritage Trail (1.6km from summit to Moon Gate) is the best easily accessible birdwatching route — take the funicular up and bird the trail down
- 2Arrive at Penang Hill by the first funicular (6:30am) for the most bird activity — the cloud forest is quietest before tour groups arrive
- 3The Penang National Park trail to the Canopy Walkway (Teluk Bahang end) is excellent for hornbills, kingfishers, and sea eagles
- 4Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Penang branch runs monthly birdwatching walks — search 'MNS Penang' for upcoming guided walks
