Malayan Independence — August 31, 1957

At midnight on August 31, 1957, Malaya gained independence from Britain. In George Town, the same Esplanade where Francis Light planted the Union Jack in 1786 was the site of its final lowering.

Cultural

At midnight on August 31, 1957, the Union Jack was lowered at the Padang in Kuala Lumpur, and Malaya became an independent nation. In George Town, the same ceremony played out at the Esplanade — the same ground that had hosted the first British flag-planting 171 years earlier. For Penang, independence brought an end to Straits Settlements status — the island was now a state within the new Federation of Malaya rather than a Crown Colony. The transition was smooth in Penang, which had long been a cosmopolitan, commercially oriented community. Penang's Chinese community in particular had deep reservations about the terms of independence, which reserved significant political power for the Malay majority. These tensions would eventually drive Penang's distinctive political character — the island has consistently voted for opposition parties in most Malaysian general elections since independence.
