George Town Declared UNESCO World Heritage Site — July 7, 2008
George Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008, recognizing its unique layering of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European cultures. The 109-hectare core zone protects the largest collection of pre-war architecture in Southeast Asia.
On July 7, 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Quebec City inscribed George Town and Melaka jointly as 'Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca.' George Town's inscription recognised its 'exceptional collection of various influences from the trade links and cultural exchanges between the Malay World, China and India, and since the 18th century also European colonialism.' The 109-hectare Core Zone and 150-hectare Buffer Zone together protect the largest collection of pre-war architecture in Southeast Asia — over 5,000 buildings, clan jetties, street art, religious buildings, and living cultural traditions. The inscription triggered a transformation of heritage tourism in Penang, drove up property values in the historic core, and is credited with saving dozens of pre-war shophouses from demolition. George Town Heritage City Day, celebrated annually on July 7, marks the anniversary with free community events.
