George Town Festival
Penang's premier arts event transforms George Town's heritage zone into an open-air gallery with international theatre, dance, music, and visual arts across heritage buildings.
The George Town Festival (GTF) is Penang's premier arts and culture event, held annually to commemorate George Town's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008. Running from late July through August, the festival transforms the heritage zone into an open-air gallery and performance venue with a programme spanning theatre, dance, music, visual arts, film, and literary events. Many events take place in heritage buildings, clan houses, and street corners, creating a unique fusion of art and architecture.
The festival attracts performers and artists from across Asia and beyond, with past editions featuring contemporary dance companies from Japan, theatre troupes from the UK, musicians from India, and visual artists from across Southeast Asia. Local artists and community groups play an equally important role, with heritage trades demonstrations, traditional music performances, and community art projects forming the backbone of the programme.
For visitors, the George Town Festival offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience Penang's creative side. Many events are free, and the festival atmosphere makes the heritage zone even more vibrant than usual. Walking tours during GTF often reveal hidden courtyards, secret gardens, and rarely opened heritage buildings that serve as pop-up galleries. The festival has been instrumental in establishing George Town's reputation as a creative hub in Southeast Asia.
