Founding of Penang — Captain Francis Light, 1786

Captain Francis Light planted the British flag on July 17, 1786, founding Penang as the first British settlement in Southeast Asia and establishing the free port that shaped its multicultural character.

Cultural

On July 17, 1786, Captain Francis Light of the British East India Company landed at the northeastern tip of a densely forested island and planted the Union Jack, claiming it for Britain. He named it Prince of Wales Island in honour of the heir to the throne. Light fired cannon balls loaded with silver coins into the jungle to encourage workers to clear the land rapidly — a legend still retold today. He laid out George Town on a grid plan, established a free port policy with no customs duties, and attracted traders from China, India, Siam, and the Malay archipelago. Within a decade, what had been a handful of Malay fishermen had grown to a cosmopolitan trading port of 10,000 people. Fort Cornwallis, built first in wood and later in laterite stone, still stands at the spot where Light came ashore. The founding set in motion everything that makes Penang unique today: its multicultural DNA, its position as a regional trading hub, and the layered heritage streetscape of George Town.
