Eastern & Oriental Hotel Opens — 1885

The Eastern & Oriental Hotel opened on Penang's seafront in 1885, founded by the Sarkies Brothers who also built Raffles Singapore. Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham were guests.

Cultural

In 1885, the Sarkies Brothers — Armenian merchants who would go on to found Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Strand in Rangoon — opened the Eastern Hotel on the Penang seafront. It was renamed the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in 1902 when it merged with the adjacent Oriental Hotel. At its Edwardian peak, the E&O was the finest hotel east of Suez, hosting visiting royalty, colonial governors, literary figures, and the global elite. Rudyard Kipling stayed here, as did Somerset Maugham and Noel Coward. The hotel's long verandah overlooking the Strait of Malacca became legendary as a place to watch the sun set over the water. The E&O survived Japanese occupation, decolonisation, and decades of changing fortunes before a meticulous restoration in 2001 returned it to its Edwardian grandeur. The original heritage wing, with its Straits Eclectic architecture and sweeping sea views, is a living monument to Penang's colonial golden age.
