Penang on a Budget: How to Travel Well for Under RM150 a Day

What RM150 buys you

RM150 a day puts you in a clean dorm or cheap private room, feeds you three full meals from hawker stalls, covers all your Rapid Penang bus fares for the day, and leaves money for a paid attraction like Penang Hill or Kek Lok Si.

This is a generous budget by Southeast Asia standards. You'll eat the same food that locals eat, sleep in guesthouses that are centrally located, and spend your days walking the city rather than sitting in a resort.

Accommodation (RM25–60/night)

Dorm beds at guesthouses in George Town: RM25–40. 99 Old Guesthouse, Muntri House, and Ryokan Muntri are regularly recommended and have AC.

Budget private rooms: RM50–70 for a clean air-conditioned double in a heritage shophouse. Slightly cramped but character in the building.

If you're staying a week or more, rates drop with negotiation. Most guesthouses offer weekly rates.

Food (RM30–45/day for three meals)

The rule: eat where there's a queue of locals.

Breakfast (RM4–8): kopitiam (coffee shop) breakfast. Roti canai with dhal costs RM2.50. A bowl of congee is RM5. A half-boiled egg with toast and kopi-o (black coffee) is RM5.

Lunch (RM8–14): char kway teow, nasi campur (pick and mix rice), a bowl of laksa, or economy rice. Eat in or near a hawker centre — Gurney Drive, New Lane, or Kimberley Street.

Dinner (RM10–18): slightly more for a cooked meal at a kopitiam or a plate of dim sum at a late-night stall.

Avoid tourist-facing restaurants along The Esplanade — identical food costs 3× more.

Transport (RM5–10/day)

Rapid Penang buses cover most of the island: RM1.40–4 per journey. A single-day pass (RM10) covers unlimited rides.

Grab from the ferry terminal to most hotels in George Town: RM8–15.

Rent a bicycle: RM20–30/day from guesthouses. George Town is flat and compact.

Paid attractions (budget picks)

  • Penang Hill (cable car return): RM30 for foreigners
  • Kek Lok Si (free entry, RM2 for lift to Buddha statue)
  • Cheong Fatt Tze Blue Mansion tour: RM18
  • Penang Museum: RM2
  • Georgetown Street Art (E&O Hotel area): free

Most of George Town is free: the temples, clan jetties, clan houses, heritage streets, and the street art are all accessible without paying.
