Three of the best-known private hospitals here are the same company. That is public record, and it changes how you read a “best hospitals” list.
Who owns the private hospitals in Penang?
Penang’s 9 private hospitals are held by 7 different owners. IHH Healthcare Berhad owns three of them — Island Hospital, Gleneagles Penang and Pantai Hospital Penang — having bought Island Hospital in November 2024. The rest are a KPJ hospital, a Sunway hospital, one family-owned independent, and three non-profits. Penang General Hospital is run by the Ministry of Health.
If you are choosing a hospital in Penang, you are probably weighing three or four names against each other. It is worth knowing that some of those names are not competitors. In November 2024, IHH Healthcare completed its purchase of Island Hospital — the largest private hospital in Penang — for around RM3.9 billion. IHH already owned Gleneagles Penang and Pantai Hospital Penang.
So three of the hospitals most often recommended to international patients now share one owner. None of this is hidden or improper: IHH is listed on Bursa Malaysia and the Singapore Exchange, and the acquisition was announced publicly. But it is not assembled anywhere a patient would look, and it is the single most decision-relevant fact about the Penang hospital market.

Why this matters when you read a “best hospitals” list
Some of the “best hospitals in Penang” lists you will find are published by hospital owners. The clearest example is IHH Healthcare Malaysia (IHH Malaysia International)'s own article, Known for Outstanding Service Quality, Discover the Best Hospitals in Penang (25 August 2025). It names 3 hospitals:
- Gleneagles Hospital Penang — owned by the publisher
- Island Hospital — owned by the publisher
- Pantai Hospital Penang — owned by the publisher
All 3 are owned by the company that published the list. To be fair to it, the article does mention an IHH affiliation inside the descriptions of Island Hospital and Pantai Hospital Penang — but not in the Gleneagles description, and nowhere does it disclose that IHH is the publisher of the article itself.
This is normal marketing and there is nothing unlawful about it. It is simply not a shortlist. A hospital can be genuinely excellent and still appear on a list only because its owner wrote the list.

- Getting a second opinion? Take it to a hospital under a different owner. Two opinions from inside one corporate group are less independent than they look.
- Comparing quotes? Compare across owners, not just across brands. Our cost page uses insurer claims data by state rather than hospital-supplied pricing.
- Reading reviews or rankings? Check who published them. If the publisher owns hospitals, you are reading marketing, however accurate the individual facts are.
- On a budget? The non-profits and Penang General Hospital are genuinely different propositions, not lesser versions of the private groups.

Every ownership fact is taken from a primary document — the owner's corporate site, the hospital's own “about us”, or the Ministry of Health — and each row links to the one it came from. We do not cite directories or aggregators for ownership. Bed counts appear only where a source states them, which is why some rows have none: we would rather leave a gap than estimate. All facts checked on 2026-07-28. Ownership changes — Island Hospital was independent until November 2024 — so if you are reading this long after that date, verify before relying on it.
