Masjid Kapitan Keling

One of Penang's oldest mosques, built on land given by Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid (Wikipedia dates it to 1808; some guides give 1801). Its Arab-style minaret has an Acehnese roof. No visiting hours are published, so go outside prayer times and ask before entering.

Dress Code
Both men and women must dress modestly. Women should cover their hair (tudung/hijab) and wear loose-fitting clothing. Many mosques provide sarongs and head coverings for unprepared visitors. Shoulders and knees must be covered.
Footwear
Remove shoes before entering any prayer area. Most mosques have shoe racks at the entrance. Socks are acceptable inside the prayer hall.
Non-Muslim Visitors
Non-Muslims are welcome to visit mosques outside prayer times for tourism. You should not enter the main prayer hall during active prayer but may observe respectfully from the entrance. Always ask a mosque official if unsure.
Photography
Photography is generally permitted in mosque courtyards and exteriors. Ask permission before photographing inside. Never photograph people during prayer. Flash photography during prayers is disrespectful.
Behaviour
Maintain silence in and around prayer areas. Switch phones to silent mode. Avoid crossing in front of a person who is praying. Do not enter if you are in a state of major ritual impurity (junub).
Visiting Hours
Most mosques are open all day but are busiest at the five prayer times (Subuh, Zohor, Asar, Maghrib, Isyak). Non-Muslim visitors should avoid the 30-minute window around each prayer time. Friday Jemaah (noon prayer) is the busiest time of the week.

What is the difference between a mosque and a surau?
A mosque (masjid) is a full-size place of worship where Friday Jemaah prayers are held and all five daily prayers are performed congregationally. A surau is a smaller prayer room or facility — usually inside a mall, hotel, or community building. Surau do not typically hold Friday prayers but are available for the other four daily prayers. For Friday Jemaah, Muslim men must go to a mosque.
Can non-Muslims enter Penang mosques?
Some mosques welcome visitors, and the rules differ. Masjid Kapitan Keling has set hours for non-Muslim visitors (daily 11am-1pm, 2pm-4:30pm and 5pm-6pm; Fridays 2pm-6pm), lends robes free and keeps its central prayer space closed to them. The State Mosque's prayer halls are not open to non-Muslims. Elsewhere, go outside prayer times and ask before entering.
Where is the nearest mosque to George Town heritage area?
