Batu Ferringhi Night Market

The Batu Ferringhi Night Market is Penang's most famous pasar malam (night market), operating every evening along Jalan Batu Ferringhi in the heart of the beach resort strip. Unlike many tourist night markets in Southeast Asia that sell mass-produced souvenirs, Batu Ferringhi's market retains a genuine local character with a mix of vendors selling handicrafts, clothing, accessories, local snacks, and curiosities. The market stretches for approximately one kilometre along the main road, starting near the Hard Rock Hotel.

The market comes alive from around 7pm, though some stalls begin setting up from late afternoon. Popular items include batik fabrics, Penang-themed souvenirs, handmade jewellery, fake designer goods (buyer beware), local snacks, and fresh tropical fruit. The bargaining culture is alive and well -- vendors expect negotiation and initial prices are typically marked up by 30-50%. A good rule of thumb is to offer half the asking price and meet somewhere in the middle.

The night market is best combined with a beachfront dinner at one of the many restaurants along the same stretch. The Long Beach food court, located at the eastern end of the market, is a local favourite for Chinese seafood, with fresh fish, prawns, and crabs cooked to order at very reasonable prices. After dinner and shopping, take a stroll along the beach where you might encounter local musicians, fire dancers, or simply enjoy the sound of waves.
