Transport from Swettenham Pier to George Town

How to get from cruise port to Penang's city center — Grab, taxis, buses, and walking options

Getting from Port to City Center

Swettenham Pier is located 2 km (1.2 miles) west of George Town's city center. The distance is short but the area is hilly. Most cruise visitors use Grab (the Southeast Asian version of Uber) or negotiate with a taxi. Walking is possible downhill but challenging on the return.

Grab — Step-by-Step Guide

Before You Arrive at Port

  1. 1

    Download Grab app

Available on App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)

  2. 2

    Create account with email/phone

Register and verify your account before traveling

  3. 3

    Add payment method

Credit card, debit card, or Grab wallet. Test it before arriving.

  4. 4

    Enable location services

Grab needs GPS to find you and drivers. Must be turned on.

At the Port (Booking Your Ride)

  1. 1

Open Grab app after clearing immigration

    This usually takes 30-45 minutes

  2. 2

Set destination as George Town (or specific address)

Try: "Lebuh Campbell, George Town" or "Fort Cornwallis, Penang" — major landmarks

  3. 3

    Select "GrabCar" (basic sedan option)

Don't use GrabShare (carpool) — you'll wait for other riders

  4. 4

    Confirm price and book

RM 10-15 to George Town. Price is fixed — no surprises.

  5. 5

    Meet driver at pickup point

App shows driver's location, name, license plate. Easy identification.

  6. 6

    Get dropped at destination

Driver follows Grab's GPS routing. Takes 15-20 minutes normally.

Grab Tips for Cruise Visitors

  • ✓ During morning (9-11 AM): Grab is cheapest, light traffic
  • ✓ During noon-afternoon (12-3 PM): Prices may surge due to demand
  • ✓ Always have a backup: Save a taxi stand number in case app fails
  • ✓ Share rides: If you meet other cruise passengers, split fare (RM 5-8 each)
  • ✓ WiFi not needed: Grab works on mobile data. Mobile hotspot acceptable.
  • ✓ Tipping is not expected but appreciated if driver was helpful

Taxi — Negotiation Guide

How to Find a Taxi at the Port

Exit the cruise terminal, follow signage to "Taxi Stand." Taxis line up outside the terminal building. Look for red cars with taxi signs.

Negotiation Process

  1. 1.

    Approach taxi driver

Choose a taxi that looks clean and has working meter

  2. 2.

    Ask destination price

Say: "How much to George Town?" or "To Lebuh Campbell?"

  3. 3.

    Expect RM 15-20

Higher than Grab, but includes luggage (Grab may charge extra)

  4. 4.

Agree on price, then get in

    Don't agree, don't ride. It's negotiable.

  5. 5.

    Pay in cash at destination

Most taxis only take cash. Have exact change if possible.

Red Flags (Avoid These Taxis)

  • ✗ Meter is broken or hidden
  • ✗ Driver insists on flat rate but won't tell you the price upfront
  • ✗ Car smells heavily of cigarettes or is very dirty
  • ✗ Driver speaks no English and won't use maps (use Grab instead)

Tip: If you speak Malay, saying "Meter, please?" (Meter, tolong?) often convinces drivers to use the meter instead of negotiating.

Walking — Is It Practical?

Walking Downhill (Pier → City)

Distance: 2 km

Manageable distance

Time: 15-20 min

Mostly downhill, easy pace

Weather: Hot & Humid

28-32°C, bring water

Route: Jalan Raja Utama → Lebuh Campbell

Well-marked, visible sidewalks

✓ Possible if:

Light luggage only, you arrive early, good fitness level

Walking Uphill (City → Pier)

Distance: 2 km

Same distance

Time: 30-40 min

Steep uphill, exhausting

Weather: Afternoon heat

Peak heat 2-4 PM, sun beating down

Risk: Miss the ship

Can't predict walking time, buffer needed

✗ Not recommended

Risk of missing ship. Take Grab instead.

Verdict: Walking downhill to the city in the morning is fine. Never walk back uphill to port — use Grab (RM 12-15). The uphill return is deceptively tiring, and you can't risk missing your ship.

Ship Shuttle Buses (If Available)

Not all cruise lines offer shuttle buses, but some do. Check with your cruise line before arriving.

How to Use

  1. 1. Ask at Ship's Shore Excursion Desk
  2. 2. Check if shuttle bus is available
  3. 3. Book in advance (usually free or RM 5)
  4. 4. Get shuttle departure times & pickup point
  5. 5. Meet at designated time/location

Pros & Cons

✓ Cheapest (RM 5 or free)

✓ Timed to ship schedule

✗ Limited schedules

✗ Can be crowded

✗ Multiple stops (slower)

Returning to the Ship

Critical Timing

All-aboard times are usually 3-5 PM depending on your cruise line. Return to ship by 2:00-2:30 PM to allow buffer time.

Never Miss All-Aboard

If you miss the ship, you'll be stranded. You must book a flight to the next port at your own expense. Always build a 30-60 minute buffer.

Return Transport Strategy

Book your return Grab 30-45 minutes before you need to leave your location. For example, if all-aboard is 4:00 PM, book Grab at 1:45 PM to be at port by 2:15 PM.

Grab Return Ride

Same process: open Grab, set destination to "Swettenham Pier" or "Penang Port," book GrabCar, meet driver. Cost: RM 12-20 depending on location.

Currency & Payment Tips

Getting Local Currency

  • ATM at Terminal

    Withdraw RM 100-150 upon arrival

  • Exchange Money

Terminal has exchange booths. Rates are fair (1 USD ≈ RM 4.5)

  • Use Card at Restaurants

    Most restaurants accept credit/debit cards

Grab Payment Methods

  • Credit/Debit Card

    Visa/Mastercard accepted. Most reliable option.

  • Grab Wallet

Load money in app. Can pay cash to drivers too.

  • Cash to Driver

Some drivers accept cash instead of card.

Quick Decision Guide

I have a smartphone with data:

→ Use Grab. Download app before arriving. This is your best option.

I don't have a smartphone / app won't work:

→ Use taxi from the terminal. Negotiate RM 15-20. Have exact change ready.

I travel light and want exercise:

→ Walk downhill into the city. But absolutely take Grab/taxi on return. Don't risk the ship.

My cruise ship offers shuttle buses:

→ Use shuttle if times work for your itinerary. Cheapest option.
